I just applied for Ante Natal classes and the literature came thorough at £180 for a 2 day intensive course.

Before I sign up to these can someone out there honestly justify to me that they are worth it; I'm sure it said £100 on the leaflet I recieved as a member and I just feel like WTF??(&&&&!!?

actually carlyp, that is a good point. i would say that of the 6 of us are mostly early to mid-thirties, professional, creative types all going back to work without a doubt. two artists, one social worker, one teacher, one shrink and a journo. two determined to use child care books, four determined not to. everyone wanted to breastfeed, half succeeded. so there is a type without a doubt, but i take it that would depend on your area. why don't you give the co-ordinator a ring lubella and ask who else is going to be on your course? at least to check that the age group would be similar.

Sounds about right to me, it's 200 quid here for a couples course. I'm probably going to do a refresher for no2 just to meet new people. Alas with a slightly different branch as my branch have not responded to repeated attempts to book a class

morningpaper · 27/09/2006 20:31

(sorry I was apologising for my apostrophes which crept all over my post )

aitch:

It was a really good thread

I remember quoting from the lastest NCT magazine at the time, which said that a birth which used anaethetic robbed a woman of her glory and triumph.

morningpaper · 27/09/2006 20:40

I can't ever find it in the Google archives

shame

Do MN towers keep any archives that we don't have online?

NotQuiteCockney · 27/09/2006 21:14

Um, as a course coordinator, I should probably point out: I know v little about people taking my classes. I don't know how old they are, and I generally don't know what they do. Sometimes I know where they work, based on their email addresses, and that's really it.

I have had a mum ask how old other class attendees were, and I said I didn't know, but I'd think late 20s to late 30s.

lulumama · 27/09/2006 21:23

eeeeeeeeeeeek! have just joined the NCT, 'middle class piggery' 'shiny hair' 'aprons'!!!!!!!

have joined as help run a mum & baby group and just done doula training so thought it would be good to meet prospective mums ,,,,,,,,,,,,,getting scared now............never knew the courses were so expensive either..thought they were a slightly more down to earth organisation........

FillyjonktheBananaEater · 27/09/2006 22:21

you could just ask what kind of cars they drive?

Our stats were: 5 SUVs, 2 new shiny things and me with my DMs....

NotQuiteCockney · 27/09/2006 22:34

I kinda have enough to do with organising courses!

Half the people who call me are having a baby next April. The other half are having the baby while we're on the phone.

FillyjonktheBananaEater · 27/09/2006 22:38

I do seriously think that some districts are fab.

Some are...not.

Some, like mine, are actually quite good on the postnatal stuff, but seriously let down by the Worse Antenatal Teacher In The World. Oh god, she was poor.

And it didn't help that our hospital classes were conducted by our fabulous community midwives, in classes of 6, and we all got to go to the pub afterwards...

KiwiKat · 27/09/2006 23:11

Am loving spending time with the people I've met through the NCT. They're all really friendly, don't make laugh if I ask daft questions, and provide REALLY good cake.

god, snorkle, i don't suppose anything can prepare you for a stillbirth... very sorry to hear that you lost your little baby.

busybusymum · 28/09/2006 00:02

We just did the NHS ones and are still good friends with some of the people from that. Not because we had forced reunions or anything put purely because we all had LO's at the same time and all lived in the same area so we saw each other around at toddlers, schools etc.

£180 WOW thats a lot of money. I would want to know how they are different from the NHS ones to warrant paying that fee.

HTH

oh yeah, and partners were excluded

helpful that. really gets the thing off on the right note, I found.

cos dh doesn't need to know how to change a nappy, or be able to fight my corner in labour, oh no

Not all classes, Sue

Just the ones where we learnt about baby care and labour.

They were allowed to come to the fluffy wittering
