12 and 20 wk scans: St Thomas vs King's

I had all my scans at the Harris Birthright Centre in my previous pregnancy. This time round I have chosen to give birth at St Thomas. I definitely won't be switching to King's.

The scans at King's were super though and I was wondering whether the scans at St Thomas are equally good? Anyone any experience?

My pregnancy is likely to be classed high risk (previous stillbirth and premature baby) so not sure whether that would make a difference in how much 'scanning attention' I will get.

Otherwise I guess I'll have to shell out and sponsor Dr Nikolaides outfit privately.

Can't you still have the scans at kings? I'm birthing at another se London hospital but having all my scans at kings, not even sure why! They just booked them all in when I had the 12w one.

Hi Dildals,

I've had all my scans for my current pregnancy (5 so far) at St Thomas'. I had issues in my previous pregnancy which weren't likely to reoccur but the sonographers at St Thomas' still took loads of care with me - they took the time to read my notes with my previous history, explained everything and offered to book me in for extra reassurance scans.

I ended up having a few issues this time as well which they dealt with well - the sonographer I saw for my 20 week scan was really thorough and seemed very experienced, she actually trains other sonographers around the UK.

I'd say the facilities at St Thomas' are probably slightly less up-to-date than King's (not that I'm an expert, I had my first at King's a few years ago) and they are very busy but no more so than King's. They are a teaching hospital and I think they have some shared training facilities with Kings.

Like I said, I wasn't technically high risk this time round but they took my previous history into account and I was well taken care of.

Sorry for the epic post! Good luck with your pregnancy.

Thanks for your replies GoWestCountry, that's reassuring!

Jeggie - I got a letter for my 12 wk scan and it was with St Thomas, so not sure!

Hello - really sorry to hear about what you've gone through. A v close friend had a late miscarriage while at St Thomas's (where she had had her first baby). She's now expecting again and St Thomas's have been excellent - had extra scans and seen the consultant a number of times. I am also pregnant and having my baby at King's this time (we moved...) so slightly nervous as UCH, where i had the other two, was so great. But the scans at King's have been very thorough so far so I appreciate your concern... But Thomas's has been really good for a few people I know who need extra care.

Hope it all goes well for you.
