Is this normal?! Now 31 weeks pregnant
Normal pregnancy so far due to see midwife tomorrow for first time since 27 weeks as I was away at 28 weeks
Woke up 3 times in the night so dry I had to get a drink and still nothing quenched it

Are you weeing an awful lot too?

This could be a symptom of gestational diabetes. I would give your GP or midwife a call today and mention it, just to be on the safe side.

Firstpregnancy2014 · 24/09/2014 06:57

Yes I am but I thought that was just a pregnant thing! I thought it was down to what I had been eating for evening meals if they were salty or anything so changed my diet abit and it's still awful !

I would mention not to the midwife.
It might be gestational diabetes as mentioned.

Ring the midwife this morning.

HolgerDanske · 24/09/2014 07:42

Yes definitely call today and make sure they know exactly how bad it was last night. Don't downplay it. Unquenchable thirst and needing to wee a lot are the two main symptoms of diabetes.

it not not

Got me worried now! I'm always thirsty in the night, just thought I haven't been drinking enough in the day and was about to say its normal. On 40+1 with DC2 and am measuring small. Assuming its not GD for me, but always worth checking it with your midwife.

Firstpregnancy2014 · 24/09/2014 09:20

Would they have tested me already for GD?
Everytime ive been to the midwife shes tested my urine for something not sure what but this has only started in the last 2 weeks

You would remember drinking the Lucozade first thing in the morning
and sitting around for two hour if they have.

Urine is tested for protein.

Firstpregnancy2014 · 24/09/2014 09:24

Oh no I definitely havnt had that then. Im at work now and on my 5th glass of water since starting at 8am. Today is definitely the worst its been but I am seeing midwife tomorrow anyway as she is only at my surgery on a Thursday so ill have to bring it up then

Yes they could detect glucose in your urine but this is not a specific enough test. A fasting blood glucose test would be a good indicator of whether you need a glucose tolerance test for gestational diabetes. Definitely mention it to your midwife as it may not necessarily get routinely tested unless you have risk factors. Excessive thirst could also just be a consequence of an increased blood volume but you should get it checked out.

Tidypidy · 24/09/2014 09:28

Could you see your gp today? If it is diabetes you could get very ill very quickly.

Topsyloulou · 24/09/2014 09:39

I've been incredibly thirsty throughout my pregnancy, I drink pints & pints of water and sugar free squash. I'm now at 40+12. I've always drunk a lot, just even more now. No signs of diabetes, just a pregnancy thing for me but it's definitely something you should mention to the midwife if it's only just started & you are weeing excessively.

WhyOWhyWouldYou · 24/09/2014 10:04

Definitely tell the midwife, just in case of diabetes but don't worry yourself too much, it can be just a pregnancy thing.

I've woke up needing drinks in the night in both pregnancies (I keep a bottle by the bed as its 2-3 times a night) and have phases of drinking excessively in the day too (like 3-4litres of water), yet tests always show I'm fine.

mrsannekins · 29/09/2014 14:22

I was drinking 3+ litres a day with DD1 and am starting to be more thirsty again now and I'm 15 weeks. I did the GTT in my first pregnancy due to PCOS and it came back fine.

I did mention it to my midwife but she wasn't concerned. I have always drunk lots of water, and it seemed like that baby made me extra thirsty.

Definitely check it out with your midwife.

caravela · 29/09/2014 16:28

Get it checked out to be safe, but it could just be a pregnancy thing so don't get too stressed at this stage. I've gone through patches of uncontrollable thirst (in all 3 trimesters) and I don't have gestational diabetes. I sometimes have a day when I can't stop feeling thirsty however much water I drink, and I eventually just stop drinking because I feel so bloated. And I also went through a phase earlier on in the pregnancy where I'd be out and about in town and then with no warning needed something to drink RIGHT NOW and had to stop everything to find a shop. Like the previous poster, I've always been quite thirsty and drink more water than most people, so I think the baby has exacerbated that. It's a pain though.
