Scan at 34 weeks

Hi everyone

I have a scan on Friday to check the position of my placenta (it was slightly low at the 20 week scan). Will they be likely to take pics at this scan or will baby be too big? Just want to know so I can make sure i have change available for the photo machine if needed. Also (and more importantly), will they measure baby or literally just look at the placenta?

Thanks in advance :)

I had a scan at 34 weeks due to ovarian cysts.

They did have a quick look at baby - after all it's another chance to reassess. Pictures were available. I think they did some measurements too.

You need change for the photo machine? Shock

Where are you based? Are you in an NHS hospital? When did they start charging? How much do they charge? Sorry for all the questions - I know that's not the point of your thread but I am a little Shock at being charged for pictures.

(I will also be having a scan for placenta previa but its not for a few weeks yet so am interested in any answers you get Smile )

I got a scan at 33 weeks as was in pre-term labour. Think they measured and had a good look at the position etc. Got a picture of the scan to keep and at that stage his head and face took up the whole photograph. My first thought was that he looked really like Mick Jagger.

Disclaimer - I am not Jerry Hall or the Brazilian ex. Wink

Hope your scan goes well and you get a good look at your baby. Smile

I had twins last year so was scanned every 4 weeks, after 24 weeks the babies were too big and photos weren't advised as we'd have just got an arm or a leg or a stomach. I took my mum to the 28 week scan and whilst the important thing was that the news came back the babies were ok she couldn't really tell what anything was on the screen. It might have been the magnification on the scan though.

I'm sure they'll check the baby too, I had a consultant appointment at 28 weeks as I have an elcs booked. I mentioned that I thought my placenta had shifted from the front as I was feeling lots of kicks. I didn't realise he had a scanner in his room and because I thought it had moved he scanned the placenta position then and there and he also checked the measurements of the baby. I was so chuffed to get this extra unexpected scan (not that I saw the screen) but the reassurance all looks ok was brilliant.

Ffallada I've always been charged in NHS hospitals for scans - we're now on our 4th so they've made quite a bit from us over the years, though it was 2 for 1 on the twins! we just had to pay for one scan picture but we got a scan of both of them.

Hi

I've just had a scan at 32 weeks and we had a photo of the baby's head and chest.

I hope your placenta isn't too low....

Sorehead · 23/09/2014 22:18

Thanks everyone! I'm glad to hear they'll have a look at baby....I can't wait to see how much he's changed since 20 weeks- it'll hopefully make the last few weeks more bearable!

Ffallada- I'm based in the North West and it's an NHS hospital. I'm not sure how much they charge because I didn't have to pay last time (scan got moved from a location where they were free to the hospital where they charge due to staffing issues). Think it's fairly expensive....worth it if your baby looks like Mick Jagger in the pic though ;)

MintChocAddict- I'm guessing you've had your baby now? Did he look like Mick Jagger when he was born?

Thanks CheshireSplat! Hope everything went ok at your scan too :) judging by your username you're not too far away from me.

Scans are (I think) £5 at my north west NHS hospital. Although we've taken our toddler in a couple of times and each time the sonographer has given her a picture for free!

vichill · 23/09/2014 22:23

I had one too for the same reason. The placenta had shifted up and they did take measurements of the baby. Dunno why. They said she'd be knocking on 10 lbs at birth which frightened be a bit. She was actually 7.14. The photo was all head but we could see loads of hair floating around.

CheshireSplat · 23/09/2014 22:24

Sound like it Sore! Was ok. Worried the baby's a little bit small but that's a whole other thread! Good luck with your last few weeks...

MintChocAddict · 23/09/2014 22:24

Sorehead nah, nothing like him as it turned out. DH breathed a sigh of relief. Wink. Must have been a combination of crazy hormones and old NHS scanners.

All the best for Friday. Smile

Sorehead · 23/09/2014 22:32

Vichill- hope they don't tell me I'm having a 10 lb baby!! Glad your placenta had moved up and your daughter was a less daunting weight than 10lb in the end!

CheshireSplat- Thank you. hope all is ok with your baby. Was your toddler a small baby?

MintChocAddict- thank you :) getting excited now!

Ours charges £4 per pic n now has a super duper machine to pay that takes card n cash! After 28wks for scans there is a notice telling you not to buy the vouchers for pics and this is because of sz of baby they may not be v clear sure sonographer will give u a pic though. I ha scan in 3 weeks at 34weeks for same reason as you OP

Taura · 24/09/2014 07:23

I had a 28w growth scan yesterday and the sonographer told us to get a good look, as at the next one (34w) the baby will be too big to get a good view of (in the field of view I presume).
