Hip/back/leg/bum ache

So I've been getting pains in my back, legs, hips and bum. mainly one side which spreads in the areas mentioned. so so painful!

I mentioned it at my last mw appointment but she sort of brushed it off and told me to take painkillers. Despite being sat down for most of today it's worse than ever. I see my mw in about 3 weeks. shall I just wait til then or get a gp appointment?

Midwives always say 'speak to your GP'. Go straight there and ask for a physio referral.

pippinleaf · 22/09/2014 21:31

I don't have any advice - but me too! I am 21 weeks and have a shooting pain in my bum/hip when I walk which is stopping me from walking my dogs and some times it's so painful I can't bend down to pick something up. I'm seeing my midwife tomorrow anyway and I'm going to ask her about it. I suspect they'll say it's just one of those things. I am worried as I'm only halfway through and I don't want to have to reduce activity because of the pain.

PolytheneGirl · 22/09/2014 21:41

Another 'me too!' At 28wks. I wake up in the night and I'm that stiff I can't even roll over. The longer I'm stood up/walking the more my back hurts and the more I sit the more my bum hurts. I can't win!

Go and see someone about it, the sooner you do the more that might be able to be done. I'm so so glad I went to see a chiropractor and later a pregnancy/sports massage person, even though I had to pay for it. I started with really awful pain from about 12 weeks and everybody told me it would get worse but it's actually better now than it was then, although at 37 weeks I'm definitely starting to creak a bit! But I'd never have managed to still be working (or at times, functioning) now without them. The chiro did say that if I'd only spoken to a midwife about it they'd have said there wasn't anything that could be done.

Me too. Exactly the same. Streching helps. Apparently it's a form/potential start of SPD

Reflexology helped me the most!

Went to midwife today and she's referred me to a physio. She says it sounds like sacro something pelvic pain. Could end up in wheelchair worst case scenario.

MrsCK · 23/09/2014 18:18

Thanks for the update pippin. It has eased today so I think I'll see how it goes and see my midwife about it!

Google PGP pelvic girdle pain, SPD symphis pubic disfunction or SIJD sacro illiac joint disfunction.

pelvic partnership have a great website with tips on how to help alleviate the symptoms as well as avoid them coming on.

I had this in all four previous pregnancies, to varying degrees. The earlier you get on top of it the better. Don't be fobbed off by a midwife saying that aches and pains are normal. Physio specialising in women/pregnancy can help as well as physiotherapy led Pilates classes were great for me.

  • get in and out of the car with your legs together"sitting on a plastic bag will help you swivel)
  • don't carry a child on one hip or a heavy hand bag - switch to a little backpack if necessary
  • don't push a trolley in the supermarket if possible

if i think of more will post again

HTH

amazing thank you. I've been fobbed off so far saying it's just normal. ...not being able to walk is hardly normal!

My husband had to carry me to the toilet on my first as it was too sore for me to put my big toe on the ground! I too thought that this was just normal aches and pains! Luckily a midwife I talked to knew it wasn't.

how many weeks are you?

MrsCK · 25/09/2014 20:28

22 it's been painful from about 14 weeks

Mine starts sometimes before I know I'm pregnant. Best of luck chasing up on this.

  • Keep your legs together as much as possible (getting in and out of the bath etc)
  • If you're immobile for any length of time your hips may 'lock' into one position. To remobilise I found that if I gently rocked my hips forward and back (initially it seems that I'm not moving at all the movements are sooo small) it frees up my bones. I used to do this before standing when I was sitting for long periods. Then once I was able to stand I'd continue with the gentle rocking/tilting of my hips until they were freed up for walking.
  • There is a belt that you can get and it certainly helped to literally hold my hips in place. It was issued by a physio and had really strong velcro on it. Someone may come along with the name
whothefuckhas5children · 25/09/2014 22:00

BTW remove the bag you're sitting on when driving

MrsCK · 26/09/2014 08:10

Right I'm just waiting for the gp to phone me back. hopefully they will agree to see me today...We have a weird system here!

Agree that you need the physio referral so that they can check alignment, do minor manipulation, take the knots out of the muscles that have been forced to work harder than they ought too. Get the referral - you have a good few months in front of you where the problem is very unlikely to go away on its own

obstetric physio referral a must
