Sickness - how much is too much?

Hi all, I'm pregnant with my first (haven't been to the doctors yet though as I've been away, planning to go on Wednesday) but I'm not sure how far along I am yet (irregular cycles, last period started August 4th but when I did the test this Monday 15th it said 1 - 2 weeks since conception).

This morning my sickness started at around 8am, it's now just past 1pm and I've been sick four times.

What would be considered 'normal' or 'usual'? Is this too often or about average? I feel bloody awful right now so the thought of several more weeks of this is making me so anxious as I've got to be back at work tomorrow from 8.45am and I don't think customers would be too happy if I ran off in the middle of a transaction with no warning!

Thank you in advance Smile

I had irregular periods too and didn't have one since feb 2014. 2 weeks ago I started to have sickness so did a test and it said 3+ after seeing my midwife on Friday she said they are 2 weeks delayed so this would make you roughly 3 - 4 weeks roughly ?? Congratulations! X

Also with sickness I think everyone is so different, I feel sick 24/7 but normally sick once or twice a day, sometimes not at all. Just make sure you eat something when you feel like your going to be sick, I have found this helps a little Smile x

Thank you, I've felt really nauseous since Tuesday but today was the first day anything came of it.

I'm really hoping that it doesn't last for too long, I'm such a wimp at being sick!

I'll try and have some toast soon, I don't feel hungry at all and have only been drinking water for the past couple of hours.

Congratulations to you also Grin

I was sick once a day, was too much for me and was given medication for it. So depends on how you feel. It becomes dangerous if you can't keep anything down as then you can get dehydrated etc.

CrackingTheWhip · 21/09/2014 13:39

I guess I will be mentioning it to the doctor on Wednesday then, currently sat on the bathroom floor again so I don't think this is a good thing for the next few weeks.

Thank you!

Hi, my doctors told me to go and see them straight away if it was more than 4 times in 12 hours but they would only prescribe mediation at that level. I never exceeded that so I was never admitted or prescribed anything and don't work so didn't need to get signed off. Resting as much as possible definitely helped if you can.

Dehydration is the biggest concern though. Alternating food and drink and eating something small every two hours was what I was advised to do.

Also look at the hyperemesis support thread even if your sickness isn't particularly severe there is good advice about what to eat and medication etc.

Good luck and congratulations!

Thank you, I may see about having tomorrow off work but I'll see how I get on this afternoon and through the night first.

I'll try to keep my water down as best I can and hope that I see a supportive doctor!

I was sick once more yesterday and have already thrown up this morning so it's a definite trip to the doctors today.

Judging by the colour of 'things' when I went to the toilet this morning too I am quite dehydrated so fingers crossed I get something to help me.

Thanks for the advice yesterday Smile

Good luck at the doctors. I hope you find a supportive one.

You are probably right about this morning. Lots of ladies on the hg thread use ketosticks you can buy from amazon to check the levels of dehydration. I didn't do this myself but they did check it at my appointments.

This may sound like stating the obvious but it doesn't have to be water. It's better to drink whatever you fancy rather than nothing and remember you can get fluid from food too.

CrackingTheWhip · 22/09/2014 09:33

Unfortunately I could only book a phone appointment as the surgery has two doctors off so I'm not sure what help I'll be offered in all honesty.

I'll try some food in a bit but I just feel plain awful right now Sad

this is very helpful

I'm currently 8+6 and throwing up 8-10 times in 24hrs (I REALLY wish I was exaggerating).

GP gave me steminle (sp?), it didn't work at all. Now I'm just waiting until I'm sick and trying to drink something in the 30 min window before I start feeling ill again. I am bloody starving, so so bloody hungry.

CrackingTheWhip · 22/09/2014 11:13

Thank you for the link Humphrey!

Bloody hell, Pantone that sounds so awful, I feel bad for complaining when you're going through that.

I had noticed also that I feel better after being sick for more or less 30 minutes before the queasiness kicks back in - is that quite common then?

I haven't been sick for three hours now, the doctor on the phone suggested the ginger biscuits and rich tea biscuits so I suppose I should at least try those this week! Trying some toast at the moment as I was actually feeling peckish.

ginger biscuits!!!

I would buy some ketosticks and test your urine. If you are dehydrated it will show up and you can demand some treatment - obviously hopefully it won't get to that, but ime doctors can be so dismissive that you need to be in possession of the facts.

Try full fat coke/lemonade or squash, it is so important to keep hydrated.

Allisgood1 · 22/09/2014 12:59

Try and keep eating, even if you feel sick. I found an empty stomach made me 1000 times worse. Also try if you can to avoid wheat and dairy. Get your DH to buy some gluten free shortbread or rich tea and gf bread for toast. I promise no wheat makes a huge difference. Also avoid water and stick to coconut water or diaoralyte. Water will make you worse. Feel better soon

Thurlow · 22/09/2014 13:06

Keep eating and keep drinking, even if it just tiny amount, as it should help you feel a bit better.

But do talk to the doctor - if you are happy to take medication, the medication is there.

Pantone, have you tried any other medication? There are a few and they all work differently for different people. I was 8-10 times a day like you and while Stemetil worked for me (or at least down to about 3 times a day, mostly late afternoon and evening, so I was able to get through ok most days) they tried cyclizine first and that didn't do too much. Maybe ask to try another type?

CrackingTheWhip · 22/09/2014 13:58

Coconut water sounds like a lovely idea, I've seen it around so may pick some up tomorrow if I can find some Allisgood

I've had some toast and a little bit for lunch and do feel slightly more human for now.
