Does going overdue (or being early?) run in families?

I feel like I've read, or been told, that your likelihood to go overdue is correlated with your own mother's or sister's experience. Is this actually true, or just nonsense that I have nonetheless believed and repeated?
(currently 39+6 and extremely fed up and clutching at straws. Both DM and DSis went 40+10ish with first DC, then 4 or 5 days with DC2, so im banking on DC 2 turning up around Friday, which would fit in nicely with plans Wink )

Not sure. I know there was a correlation between being a premie baby yourself and being more likely to have a premie baby but no idea if that works for term babies.

RandomMess · 20/09/2014 20:21

If your cycle replicates your Mum's/Grandma's then yes your pregnancy length is likely to as well.

Sorry!!

Liara · 20/09/2014 20:23

Not for me. My sister went overdue by over 10 days on both of hers, mine were both pretty much exactly 40 weeks.

My mum can't remember.

PrincessWatermelon · 20/09/2014 20:27

My mum was late with us 3 daughters...ranged from 7-12 days I think. My DSis was 14 days late with her first and induced at 7 days late with second (GD). My other DSis was 12 days late with hers. I was 13 days late with first and currently 2 days late and no sign of the baby!! And all those pregnancies were/are for girls too!

So, yes, in our family it seems to be the trend to produce late girls Grin

MsSampson · 20/09/2014 20:31

Interesting... No idea about cycle length, but I am going to stick to my unscientific findings here and go with 5 days over for this one. Stop me getting unbearably impatient before then at least.

Ooh, this is interesting. My brother and I were both early... I was hoping for on time to late to get further from Christmas (EDD 23rd Jan), but I'm pretty sure by the time I get to December I won't mind knocking a couple of weeks off!

RetiredOBGYN · 21/09/2014 01:20

In some families yes.

hartmel · 21/09/2014 04:50

Following with interest!
This is what my mom told me:
My brother (first child) came around 42 weeks via c section and I came around 38 weeks..

So far my son arrived week 40+6 due induction (medical reason) and I'm currently 35 weeks with no 2 (girl) and with the amount of Braxton hicks and position I have the feeling she will arrive around 38/39 weeks but you never know..

Jup and if you noticed my mom had to children first one a boy second one a girl. Age difference 13 month..

Me: first a boy second will be a girl and age gab will also be 13 month

I'm currently 40+1 and hoped to go early because my mum did for both me and my sister...oh wellWink

my nct yoga instructor thinks because I'm tall there is more room for baby and that gestational periods are different because of size etc. she told me Full term is different in different countries (ie is 38 weeks in most Asian countries but 42 weeks in scandanavian countries) no idea if this is true but really hoping it starts soon.

ShadowStar · 21/09/2014 05:58

Not sure.

I know the furthest we've got in my family ( me, mum, sister) is 40 + 1. The rest of the term babies turned up between 37 - 39 weeks, although DS2 (37+2 weeks) was induced, so I don't know when he'd have arrived if left to his own devices. And DS1 spontaneously turned up at 34+1 weeks.

But I don't know whether it's all just chance or not.

cookielove · 21/09/2014 06:16

My mum waa on time for all three of her children, my sister had both if her boys early, 36 weeks and 38 weeks. But both were sections due to underlying medical conditions. I spontaneously went into labour at 33 weeks and had ds at 34+1 so 6 weeks early Confused he is officially due on Tuesday!

Eastpoint · 21/09/2014 06:19

My mother had my brother & me early & I had my 3 after 41 weeks.

Eastpoint · 21/09/2014 06:20

Sorry I went wrong there & I don't know why I said we were early, all babies were late. Early morning brain?

BikeRunSki · 21/09/2014 06:41

I was 7 weeks prem. Between us my GM, DM, DSis and I have had 9 children, 8 of who were born between 33-39 weeks, and the other at 42.

Bellyrub1980 · 21/09/2014 07:59

Oh Christ! My mum was allowed to go a month over with both my brothers! :/ But it was the early 70's and they assumed she was having very small babies (they weren't, they were 11lb and 10lb)... So I guess I could go the whole 42 weeks then!! (And they keep telling me this baby is small....)

beckie90 · 21/09/2014 08:21

Mum had me at 38 weeks but was induced due to pre-eclampsia, my sister was 10 days late also induced. My first was 2wk overdue and induced, second was 40+4 and spontanious and ds3 was 38weeks also spontanious

MsSampson · 21/09/2014 08:30

God - a month over! Doesn't bear thinking about. I mean, I don't want to be induced, but at least you've got some kind of deadline.

Bellyrub1980 · 21/09/2014 08:36

I know... 10 months pregnant!! Thank god that won't even be an option for us nowadays!! My mum has been very clear all along that the fundal height measurement is NOT reliable and to ignore all the comments of 'blimey aren't you small!' This was proven right with me also, fundal height apparently showing a baby under the 10th centile, growth scan showing a completely average sized baby. Thank god we now have scans!!

Pobblewhohasnotoes · 21/09/2014 09:11

I was two weeks over as was my brother. DS was a week early.

micah · 21/09/2014 09:19

My mum went two weeks over. Apparently all babies in our family are enormous and overdue.

Dc1 was 7lb and two weeks early. I'd taken my mothers word for it, had nothing ready, hadn't started maternity leave, no pram or car seat, only a pack of 0-3 vests which were enormous!

My sister was smack on her due date.

Mind you, my mothers biology knowledge is appalling. She was under the impression that labour and delivery takes an hour or so from start to finish, and thinks breastfeeding is "unhygienic".

slightlyinsane · 21/09/2014 09:44

Have no idea about my mum but my sister went over with her 3, all inbetween 1 to 2 wks. All of my 5 were early from 1 day with1st to 4wks wwith twins.

ohthegoats · 21/09/2014 10:41

I was a month early, so was my brother. I was told all along that I'd have a small, early baby... here I am at 39 weeks. So, in my anecdotal experience it doesn't run in families!

petitverdot · 21/09/2014 11:48

My mum and sister have given birth to five children between them, all close to due date but slightly early. Currently 39+2 with my first and no obvious signs of an imminent arrival - hoping I'm not going to take after my dad's mum, who was three weeks late with my aunt Shock

Finola1step · 21/09/2014 11:50

Certainly does seem to be a trend along the maternal line in our family. No babies ever come before their due date. First babies arrive 14-21 days late.

neversleepagain · 21/09/2014 19:43

My 2 sisters and I have had 5 children between us
