Weight loss in early pregnancy (twins)

Am ten weeks pregnant with MCDA twins. Totally struggling with food, nausea , awful stomach cramps. I went to the doctor and got a weeks worth of anti-emetics which sort of worked but didn't help with the nausea. I've lost about 15Kg so far. Doctor seemed to feel that so long as I wasn't dehydrated there was nothing to be done. That was about three weeks ago though and I've lost 5kg since then. Is it worth going back and being pushy or do I just have to struggle through?

I would go back. That's an awful lot of weight to lose. Were you overweight to begin with?

But congrats on the pregnancy!

I'd be tempted to go back, as that is quite a lot of weight to lose. I'd say you certainly need to have your urine tested for ketones as if the anti-emetics aren't helping too much then you could still be dehydrated. You can also ask for longer prescriptions of the anti-emetics - I was on mine the whole pregnancy. They didn't stop me being entirely sick but certainly brought it down to a slightly more manageable amount.

Silly question, but are you trying to eat or just letting the nausea put you off food?

I lost weight during the first trimester, people kept commenting I was getting slimmer, especially from the back. Later on I started eating better and by the end I was eating properly.

I'd do anything not to have sickness again in another pregnancy, but if you have to find a silver lining to every cloud (and I remember being desperate to find one) then you don't have much baby weight to lose afterwards Blush

Hope you find something that works for you soon. Sickness is just horrible. To a degree you just have to struggle through some of it, but if there is a lot of weight loss and dehydration then keep pushing for help as you may need occasional goes on a drip etc to rehydrate you again.

I am trying to eat but nothing stays down past noon and even if my stomach is empty I do lots of dry heaving/ throwing up bile. Stomach feels like I've been kicked by a horse half the time. I did have a tummy thing/ awful diarrohea (sp?) about three weeks ago which is why I initially went to the doctor. I am sipping water constantly so not really getting too dehydrated.

Am only really eating BRAT diet in an effort to calm tummy down.

It helps to try and nibble on something even when you really don't feel like it, even if it is crisps and toast and crackers. No need to worry about your diet, plenty of HG babies survive the first few months purely on Weetabix and ready salted crisps! But having something in your stomach can help a little bit with the nausea - I certainly found that when my blood sugar started to drop I felt even sicker. And personally I kind of preferred having something to throw up to dry heaving.

But I'd say make another appointment.
