Apologies for TMI but I got to ask. Last night I went for a No 2 and it was the size of a satsuma, hurt like heck and seems to have split me. There was a bit of blood when I wiped and this morning when I went it obviously split again and there was blood on the loo roll again. Can I just keep it clean, dry and use vaseline or is it best to see doctor for a proper cream?

It may be that you have piles and that is what the blood is. TBH, I would see my GP, they see them all the time and will be able to give you the best advise. Best of luck. And hope work is sorting itself out for you xxx

Hi squishy, thanks for responding and how nice that you remembered about my work problems. I've had 2 weeks off as it was all getting too much. My boss rung me on friday to see how I was which was nice but I expect my salary issue won't be resolved. I've decided that I'm just going to be more laid back and not let things bother me as much (easier said than done!) Whether the unreasonable comments and pressure about going back next year will stop I don't know but I'll just have to learn to keep my cool! With regards to my other problem whats the difference between piles and a cut you know where? xx

I think piles bleed easily as they are swollen veins , as opposed to an actual tear of the skin which is less likely but not impossible. Is it very painful? I often notice little bits of blood and thought it was spotting at first, but have identified it as behind! Try and eat lots of fibre I guess, drink water etc, anything to avoid satsumer shaped poos!

Daisypops · 25/09/2006 21:10

Carrotcake- the blood is only there straight after the No2. Its painful when its happening but theres just a bit of stinging otherwise. I've been having bran flakes every morning for ages and drink about 4/5 pints of water a day. Constipation doesn't seem to be a problem, infact I did a few normal size ones before the satsuma appeared. Bit odd really!

Daisy, I've had them in the past and thought I've torn myself, but it was just very very painful......

Glad to hear you've had a break from work - I know it's hard, but if you can remember that your health is the most important thing, it might stop them from getting to you so much (or you getting wound up about it!).

Tutter · 26/09/2006 08:21

daisy -piles v common in pg (and after birth unfortunately - see my many other threads re farmers ).

anusol cream and suppositories are the normal course of action (not sure whether suppositories ok in pg though). if it continues i'd suggest seeing your gp.

Bozza · 26/09/2006 08:48

It's probably piles. They are not necessarily caused by constipation in pregnancy but also by the baby weighing down on the veins in the back passage. Obviously it makes sense to avoid constipation because that will only make everything worse. I used to eat dried apricots - they are also rich in iron which is good when pg.

Sad to say but giving birth will also probably make them worse. I would mention it at your next antenatal checkup and you should get a prescription for some free anusol or equivalent.

carrotcake · 26/09/2006 10:04

Yes, the poo is probably scratching or scraping the piles as it comes past which would explain the blood imeediately after, daisypops, but I think Bozza is right, some people get them even if they're not constipated because of pressure. I eat tons of fibre/drink loads as well, but I still seem to get it, I think the digestive system slows right down to absorb nutrients. I've never tried anusol though, perhaps that would help?

Snowstorm · 26/09/2006 10:17

If in doubt go and see your doctor because it might not be piles, it might just be that you've torn yourself a bit (a 'fissure' or something like that?) and you don't want to get to the point that you are dreading going to the loo because of the discomfort. I'm not sure what piles is like (would you perhaps be able to feel them - isn't it supposed to be like a bunch of grapes or something?!) but if you've had an odd shaped hard poo then that would also explain the blood and the stinging sensation. In any case, some prunes/prune juice each morning might also help soften things up in the meantime ... if you can force the stuff down

carrotcake · 26/09/2006 10:32

snowstorm, piles are when the veins around the anus swell so much they pop out, and indeed look like little bunches of purple grapes. Nice! I've looked btw

CurrantBun · 26/09/2006 15:04

Daisypops, I've had similar before and it wasn't piles. Basically sometimes if you do an extra-large no. 2 it causes a little tear because the no. 2 is a bit too big to get out easily (happens especially if you strain or if no. 2 is quite hard). It's quite painful and stings but there is not much blood - just a little on the paper when you wipe. Problem is that when you go again it hasn't always had a chance to heal so you get the same problem.

Don't try to 'hold in' a no. 2 though just because you think it'll hurt. Let it come out gradually (sorry if TMI!) and try to keep relaxed - also drink plenty of water to try and soften your stools. I put some Savlon on mine when it was particularly sore but you might also want to try moistened toilet tissue if it's painful to wipe with normal paper.

It usually goes really quickly so try not to worry.

Daisypops · 26/09/2006 18:09

Thanks everyone. I think it is a tear and not piles. Its quite sore so have spoken to the doctor and hes giving me some cream. My next worry is my quiet bub not felt movements much in last 2 days.
