Hi all,
could anyone please recommend me a good product to swaddle a newborn baby? My baby still hasnt arrived, but I am planninG to swaddle (at least to try) and I got totally confused when choosing products. There are special gro-swaddles (with a sticker or a zipper to close it) and there are clothes which looks like just a square (like a muslin), also there are swaddling muslins....What do I need?

Hi - we had some Aden and Anais swaddling cloths. Pricey, but nicely designed, and now we still use them as travel-cot sheets, swimming towels, etc.

Good for sort of lightweight swaddling, i.e. we wrapped baby up in one and then put a blanket over the top. She probably could have broken free if she wanted and we stopped before 6 months. If you want something properly restraining you'll need one of the ones that look like a baby straightjacket.

Same as PP. We use Aden and Anais swaddle cloths. They do sell ones for beginners called Easy swaddles.

Pricey but for me they were worth the money :)

Just to put a different point out there. My DD totally hated being swaddled from day 1. She has always slept like a starfish (still does age 6) with arms up and out and I know of a fair few friends with babies that were the same.

Might be an idea to have something in mind, but see how baby gets on first before buying anything too pricey (which is what I will do this time, but unfortunately didn't the last).

ThinkIveBeenHacked · 18/09/2014 19:21

I had the Aden and Anais ones too. I love them and cant wait to use them again with DS. We also were given a Groswaddle - shaped and stretchy but no zips or velcro - the baby was wrapped and laid on the edge so it didnt come loose. dh Prefered the Groswaddle as he got very confused with just a basic muslin.

TK mAxx do.giant muslins squares if you want to pick up a couple for not too spendy.

bouncinbean · 18/09/2014 19:26

Used large muslin squares for a summer baby. Would probably use same in autumn/winter because our house is pretty warm but if you have a cooler one then a thin cotton cellular blanket could work.
I can see the appeal of specifically made products but I'm a bit of a hippy and don't like over buying things so good to use things that have multiple uses.
I was shown how to do it by nurse in hospital but am sure Google and you tube will also show how.

I've been watching you tube videos on swaddling and its very easy. I'm just trying to decide where to get the muslin cloths from.

MultipleMama · 18/09/2014 21:40

Try sites like amazon, mothercare, mamas & papas and even some market stalls or places like John Lewis.

I dislike growbags and luckily all 6 DC loved to be swaddled Grin

Camsie30 · 18/09/2014 21:43

If you have one nearby, I've seen some lovely looking organic cotton ones in TK Maxx

Middleagedmotheroftwo · 18/09/2014 21:44

You don't need to buy anything special to swaddle a baby. You can just use a cot sheet. Don't waste your money!

Justgotosleepnow · 18/09/2014 21:46

My dd liked to be swaddled in her early days. I got the gro company swaddle. Perfect shape, not too hot and didn't come unstuck (if an arm came out she would whack her head and wake up)
But I definitely would not get one that they couldn't wriggle out of.

Anotherchapter · 18/09/2014 21:47

Op my dd hated swaddling as a new born but loved it two months in Confused

I would buy something cheap to start of with - I got a lovely one from TKMAX.

Smartiepants79 · 18/09/2014 21:49

Miracle blankets.
Worth every penny I ever spent on them.
Babies are very good at escaping from swaddling. There is no escape from these blankets.

Pico2 · 18/09/2014 22:10

We were given these by a friends. They were great for Sept born DD.

Misscocopops · 18/09/2014 22:26

My lo is due on Sunday and I also want to swaddle from newborn before moving into gro bags, but read that not all babies like it. I brought a nice purple swaddle thing from tkmaxx fir £10 and I also brought a swaddle pod for £10 from mothercare (just google swaddlepod). Swaddlepod is a zip up then the tkmaxx was a Velcro hold. Im just going to see now if she likes it and how wriggly she is, but I have high hopes for the swaddlepod x

MsBug · 18/09/2014 22:30

We had a swaddle me wrap thingy with Velcro; dd loved it. I was way to sleep deprived to work out how to swaddle her with a normal blanket!

dolicapax · 18/09/2014 22:52

DD hated being swaddled, she wouldn't go to sleep unless her arms were free. They are also a rubbish idea if you have a collicky baby, as they need to kick their legs and move about a bit to ease the wind. I'd recommend buying only one basic inexpensive swaddle to start with.

CarbeDiem · 18/09/2014 23:17

Just get some normal sized thin cotton moses basket sheets. At least then if baby doesn't like being swaddled you still have use for the sheets.

Gen35 · 19/09/2014 03:59

Dd loved being swaddled but only the pod and Velcro ones would hold her, the swaddle blankets would just come lose. Stopped at 12 weeks

Honeybear30 · 19/09/2014 04:04

Another vote for gro swaddle. I only bought one just in case DS didn't like it. He's 12 days old and I've just ordered some more online. I find it much easier to use than a muslin, especially at this time of night. It's also lightweight so I don't worry about temperature and the tightness can really be adjusted, I was fretting he would be too tight but as there are no zips or Velcro bits he can wriggle free when he really wants to, I.e. It's time to feed and wake me up!

Mouthfulofquiz · 19/09/2014 04:39

I second the aden and anais - in the end I got 8 for my first, and 8 for my second baby. I use them for everything and always seem to have one draped over my shoulder or round my neck!

Twinklestar2 · 19/09/2014 05:41

Another vote for Aden and Anais!

It's a running joke in my house the amount of uses I can find for their swaddle blankets! They are brilliant.

squizita · 19/09/2014 11:47

Bought some swaddle blankets from Kiddiecare and TK Maxx. They're light blankets but the shape makes wrapping them neater/easer. Some have velcro.

TwoLittleTerrors · 19/09/2014 13:49

I am using gro swaddle and love it. I don't do them up very tight and so they are more like blankets that wrap around. They are so much easier than blankets that don't stay on for 2 min. As for suggestions on buying cot sheets. Um I don't use cot sheets so that would have to be specially purchased. As for the price. Mine are second hand off ebay and looks very new. Any nearly new sale would have a good selection too. A good brand like gro swaddle or Aden and Aidan should give you good resale value. You might end up only loosing a quid or two when onsellimg after a few months.
