Palpitations First Trimester- Driving me insane! :-(

Hi everyone. I am currently 8+6. I have had palpitations on and off throughout the past 5/6 years. Mainly off through this year, up until a couple of weeks ago. The result on my last hospital appointment a couple of years ago was undiagnosed, and was just told I had a slightly irregular beat and sometimes an extra beat. They have recently started again, which I have read can be normal in pregnancy. However this time round they are driving me insane! They seem to appear when I am relaxed. The extra beat almost feels like it's slightly shaking. I am really trying not to stress about them but they are impossible to ignore. I know I need to book a doctors appointment, but has anyone else had the same? Can they be harmful? X

I had the same up until I was 16 weeks. I am 22 wks now. They drove me mad and stopped me sleeping. I had an echo and 24 hour ecg and was told.i had ectopic beats (extra beats). Have been told these are not dangerous and have been discharged by cardiology and gone from consultant led care to midwife led now. Apparently they are worse in your first and third trimester so will prob come back. The obstetrician said it is very common and some people have extra beats without noticing.
I would go to your GP. They are very unpleasant/annoying/scary but quite common in pregnancy and usually not harmful. Soz for rambling x

I feel for you so much, I had just a week of it, the first week I knew I was pregnant. In the end I believe it was anxiety, and as soon as I accepted it was (despite feeling exceptionally happy and happy go lucky) the palpitations stopped. I couldn't imagine putting up with it though the wholeregnancy, you have my sympathy.

Have you tried vagal manoeuvres? I got palpitations (svt) a lot in my second pregnancy and holding my breath stopped them as a rule.

Hi all thanks for the replies. butternut22 yes I had my fair share of ecg's and had a 24 or 48 hour one (I forget as it was a few years ago) and in that time it found nothing as I had no palpitations! Which I had warned them might happen as it wasn't necessarily every day. thescenicroute even a week of them is enough! It could well be anxiety for me too as I have had previous mc's although like I say it seems to be when I relax Confused mummytomog after writing this post last night I got so fed up that I did actually try doing that.. It worked for a moment or two and then they came back Sad I think my answer is to go to the gp! Thank you everyone x

Good luck at the GPs. Mine were when I relaxed mainly as well. I found I only couldn't feel them when exercising because my heart was pounding anyway xx

pieceoftoast · 16/09/2014 18:29

I had this! Not the previous diagnosis but constant palpitations in first tri. Had an ECG done, they couldn't find a cause, just said ectopic heartbeats. It's calmed down now a bit (19 weeks) but still happens sometimes. Like you, felt worried as it was happening so regularly. Strange.

Roseylee20 · 16/09/2014 21:01

butternut22 thank you, yes I know what you mean as I only notice them when I sit down at home after work. I'm sure they're not helping my sickness at all! pieceoftoast glad yours have calmed down. They are very strange. They didn't even find a 'real cause' for mine before I was pregnant so I'm definately not expecting a miracle whilst I'm pregnant as I've heard they are 'common'! x

Another one who suffers from palpitations, waiting for my2 4 hour ECG, I had started investigations before I was PG, they then stopped as quickly as they came for about 6 weeks and I put them down to stress, but they came back last week and haven't stopped since, they are regular and every.single.day!

Still waiting for my MW apt (9+2) so will mention it to her then, she might be able to speed up my investigations! Good luck with your GP Rosey

They are really unpleasant! I hope you get your ecg soon squidge. I have had my 24 hour ecg in July but found out the Dr still hasn't looked at the tape. My echo was ok though so I have been told they are not dangeroud. I have not had any for about 2 months but am expecting them to come back in my third tri. Good luck with midwife.

LightUpLightUp · 18/09/2014 19:35

Hi I had these pretty intensely up until approx 20 weeks, I was on consultant led care due to this coinciding with the fact I have a loud heart murmur. I was discharged from consultant led care after lots of tests and the palpitations have stopped, I am now 35 weeks and have had no further problems regarding this apart from breathlessness. It is very common in pregnancy just keep an eye on it and if you have concerns ring your midwife

chestut · 18/09/2014 20:55

Have also had this and all investigations normal, I have SVT but diagnosed with ectopic heartbeats which are not related to SVT. I have found that drinking 2 litres of water a day helps also found that if 1st rib on left side is not moving properly when breathing (or is depressed)this also sets them off which can only be put down to nerve stimulation. A good physio can check this for you and give you an exercise to make sure rib is moving this has made my life 100% easier. No ectopics since doing this exercise.

Roseylee20 · 19/09/2014 08:14

Hi everyone, LightUp I think I will mention it at the next midwife appointment. squidge does this mean that today you are 9+3? Because I am too! Or will you be 9+2 at your midwives appointment?
