What to dress a January Newborn baby in?

From what I've read, indoors would be a vest & a baby grow plus a blanket,

Outdoors would be a vest, baby grow, snowsuit, blanket, hat and gloves.

Is this right for both? I'm really worried about overheating baby and I've read that much about SIDS I've scared myself. Just want to make sure that that's right for baby to wear?

Thats what we dressed our Jan baby in. If your house is cosy no need for too many layers but outside I would wrap them up well

peasandlove · 15/09/2014 04:54

Isn't the rule of thumb what you are wearing plus one more layer?

VestaCurry · 15/09/2014 04:56

Sounds fine to me. If your house is warm, baby may not need vest, just babygrow. That's what I did indoors most of the time.

Orangedaisy · 15/09/2014 04:56

Sounds about right. We also had a couple of thin but still wool/fleece cardies for inside. We found thick hoody cardigans and then blanket layers good too-snow suits get grown out of quicker and size matters more (I.e. Doesn't matter if a cardigan is too long and sleeves roll up, while a too long snowsuit just doesn't really work).

I had a jan baby and this one jan too. I was same as you altho bought a fluffy warm coat as opposed to a snowsuit. as found a snowsuit the baby couldn't move in it. plenty of blankets for going out x

I would swap snowsuit for a thick cardigan, and use a 'bug in a rug', plus a footmuff or blankets in pram. Easier as baby can't wear snowsuit in car ( straps won't be right enough) or in shop/ indoors ( overheat). I usually add bootiea, hat and gloves depending on weather

Indoors I do babygrow, vest and cardigan if needed

I have the same conundrum, mine is due in December. Someone on here suggested using a sleeping bag in the pram rather than a snow suit, which seems like a good idea. Also I've got one of these: tuppenceandcrumble.com/shop/star_wraps/fleece-baby-star-wrap-brights
The problem with a snow suit is that it is difficult to 'thread' baby's floppy arms though them, so I'm trying to avoid using one on a newborn.

In DDs case one layer less than me. She was grizzly if you put her in a vest and threw a full scale tantrum at snow suits. Hats and gloves just got removed, chewed and lost.

A cardigan over her baby grow was tolerated if it was cold and she was happy to snuggle under a cosy toes and light blanket in the pushchair. So long as you unzipped it and pushed the blanket below her toes in shops.

i never used snowsuits as they are just too big and bulky. Too padded for use in a carseat and a fanny on getting on and off.

Inside- vest, sleepsuit, cardi if cool. Blanket over for sleeping.

Outside- added a fleecey pramsuit, hat andthick blanket in the pram or carseat.

I had a January baby. Vest plus babygrow in the house with a thin wool cardi on top if chilly. For going out we used a Morrck travel baby wrap which was fantastic - saved fighting a newborn in and out of clothing, and safer in the car seat than a padded coat or snowsuit. We were given a snowsuit as a hand me down and did not use it once - its previous owner (a November baby) hadn't used it either :-)

Using this thread to make a list. What is a vest in baby clothes? Same sleeveless hip length item that adults wear?

ThinkIveBeenHacked · 15/09/2014 09:10

no - like a bodysuit with poppers under the crotch and no legs.

Peaceloveandbiscuits · 15/09/2014 09:11

Watching with interest!

Another thing I used to do with dd in the winter was a long sleeved vest over a pair of tights in the house. Then if we went out id stick a dungaree style dress over or a fleecey all in one and she would be nice and snuggly.

Chipandspuds · 15/09/2014 09:24

DS was a December baby and indoors I dressed him in a sleeveless vest, babygrow and knitted cardigan. To go outside I then put him in a snowsuit and covered him with a soft fleecey blanket as well and a hat as his snowsuit hood was quite baggy and let in the wind!

A tip I learned on holiday in Copenhagen was if it's very windy to use the rain over as a windshield too.

At night time I put DS in a sleeveless vest, babygrow, knitted cardigan and swaddled him in a knitted blanket. When he got past the swaddling stage I used cellular blankets instead.

I think it's just a case of checking the baby often and lots of layers.
