Just wondering, it's my second pregnancy and I'm having two 125 ml glasses of wine a week (since around 4 months) is that about normal / ok - there seems to be little research on it.

I'm pregnant with DC2, I've tried to have a glass of wine a couple of times but hated the taste. I love a glass normally though!

None!

Whoever compared drinking alcohol to eating apples in here: that was the worst argument I've ever heard to condone drinking!

Whilst results from science are mixed I thought it would be best just to not drink at all. But then I wasn't a big drinker anyway so I'm not missing it at all.

Blamber it was a general example, not specific to alcohol but anything where people use "there isn't research" to influence pregnant women. The point it was making was that if something isn't controversial no one ever says "there isn't research".

Having done LOTS of my own reading on pregnancy dangers and risks, the overwhelming evidence points to very occasional glasses of wine or beer being harmless. However, as occasional consumption is culturally defined and those who over indulge often in denial, the government wisely say "none".
Sadly this isn't likely to stop addicts or people living somewhat 'outside' the system from exposing their babies to FAS. FAS for your average, regular-jo pregnant woman is vanishingly rare.
But I've worked with families where several kids have it ... because mum is addicted. Something rarely mentioned is this family 'clustering' ...

I don't drink at all when pregnant. However I can see why many women feel safe having the odd glass at a wedding or weekend.
It's a far, far cry from the situations I have seen.
If someone in that situation "cut back" by half it would be a half bottle of vodka ... hence they can't say "cut back" really.

The crux is in the fact that alcohol is known to have a poisonous effect on the body, even though they are unsure how much is bad whether pregnant or not, and apples don't.
Therefore the comparison is invalid.

PenguinsIsSleepDeprived · 15/09/2014 13:48

No one is comparing apple and alcohol consumption! You have misunderstood the analogy.

squizita · 15/09/2014 14:01

Blamber Alcohol was NOT being compared to apples at all. Apples were used as an example of something bland and without controversy, where research is inconclusive/limited. Alcohol is controversial and known to be harmful in high amounts but both sides often say "not much data for small amounts" as if this validates their argument (remember, both sides do this).
The point being made was about that 'get out of jail' argument winner being over used in pregnancy. It could equally apply to anything from vaccinations to side sleeping to caffeine. Anything where both pro and anti glibly use "not enough research" to mean "I don't want to change my mind or read up on this."

It varies, sometimes I go for weeks with none, but some weeks I might have one small glass of wine up to twice in the week. Depends a bit on what's happening socially/ if there are any special occasions.

Chloris33 · 15/09/2014 14:19

PS. I do miss it and am looking forward to a large glass of a particularly yummy wine and some oozing unpasteurized cheese some point after pregnancy!

wawabear · 15/09/2014 14:24

At the moment zero as I am in the first trimester.

After that I may start to use a splash of red wine in the slow cooker when I cook the Sunday roast - as I really miss that.

Otherwise, whilst I think that drinking the odd glass won't do the baby any harm, I don't think it will do it much good either. I'd rather have a smoothie just now.

Ask me again in 7 months and I'll probably grab your hand off for a glass of sauvingnon blanc!

None. I did some reading and it seems to me that whilst many women drink a few glasses of wine every now and again and their babies are absolutely fine, there is no 100% certain safe amount. So I am not drinking. It's only nine months and in the first trimester I don't even want it anyway.

I made it through last time with a few alcohol free beers (which have improved enormously over the years, btw) and one bottle of alcohol free wine (still tastes like grape juice IMO).

Having said that, I try not to pass judgements on others who've made different decisions as I took different decisions about other risks. I ate dippy eggs, for example. And rode my bike until about 28 weeks (it was a race bike, I couldn't breathe after that due to the position, otherwise would have kept going) which my family were horrified about.

squizita · 15/09/2014 21:51

WaWa cooking wine in a slow cooker breaks down the alcohol completely. Zero percent left! :)

Gennz · 15/09/2014 22:26

Pretty sure the McDonald's cheeseburgers I was eating in week 11 weren't doing me or the baby much good either. If "is what I am consuming doing me/the baby good" then most of us would fall at the first hurdle. Surely "is what I am doing causing/likely to cause proximate harm" is the best test.
