OMG I'm getting so flippin' fat - tell me it will go afterwards!

I'm 20 weeks and I've put on probably too much weight. My arse, thighs and upper arms are getting chunky. I was a size eight before this pregnancy but now I'm enormous. I'm trying to be accepting of it but I know I'm probably eating too much, but I'm so hungry!

I can cope with it a bit better if i feel that I will manage to lose it afterwards without having to diet for years. Help!

I am 19+4 and feel similarly lardy. I keep telling myself bf will fix it Hmm

MirandaWest · 12/09/2014 19:19

I put on 4.5 stone in each of my pregnancies. After the first one it all came off and more within a year without putting much effort in.

After my second pregnancy it took longer but that was partly due to other things happening. But I really wouldn't worry too much, especially if you are thin to start with.

crumpet · 12/09/2014 19:26

I am about 5'3", and generally weigh under 9 stone, but with each of my pregnancies I put on 3 stone. It does go!

butternut22 · 12/09/2014 19:35

I put on 4 stone (8.5 stone to 12.5 stone) with my first pregnancy and lost it all within 8 months. I am now 21 weeks with my second and I am getting humongous again. I am getting jowls!!

PretzelPrincess · 12/09/2014 19:38

Enjoy your pregnancy and enjoy your baby once it's here. You WILL lose the weight. It's really not worth stressing over.

beccajoh · 12/09/2014 19:38

I think I peed out most of my weight gain in the 48 hours after giving birth.

squizita · 12/09/2014 20:08

I'm 40 weeks. Today I made the error of looking at my back after a shower. Clothed, people commented I was looking healthy. .. but they haven't seen the fact my back looks like a HIPPO!
When I told DH I would have to join slimming world after birth, he commented "or we could sell you for bacon" Grin CHARMING!

RetroHippy · 13/09/2014 08:00

I have mirrored wardrobes on two full walls of my bedroom (just moved in, not ny choice!). Having caught sight of my back fat last night I think at 21 weeks this might be the time to hang some curtains! No idea what I've gained so far, we don't own scales, but I suspect it may be over the recommended 10lbs.

My mum swears by bf - says she could literally feel us sucking the fat out [boak], but she was cycling to work every day whilst pg which may have helped!

pippinleaf · 13/09/2014 08:25

Thanks ladies. I think I will stop weighing myself and looking at myself from the side where I can see my massive butt cheeks!

Hahahah squizita!!!

Pippin I have put on 12kgs at 29 weeks - but I'd stacked on 10 at 20 weeks. Then it slowed right down & I've only really started gaining again in the last week or so. My thighs are enormous and disgusting but I figure it will be much easier to walk it off when I'm not waddling/don't feel sick/have time off work etc etc. Fingers crossed!! Hopefully the weight I gain over the next 2.5 months will be baby + fluid, not actual fat...

FamiliesShareGerms · 13/09/2014 08:50

BF is the best weight loss regime I've ever come across

beccajoh · 13/09/2014 09:17

I didn't lose a single pound whilst breastfeeding.

monkeyfacegrace · 13/09/2014 09:20

I started at 10 St 3lb.

I'm now 12+3 weeks, and weighed in yesterday at 11st 12lb.

I actually have a pregnant arse and thighs.

and I'm not going to breastfeed so fuck knows how I'm going to shift it.

Oh well.

squizita · 13/09/2014 11:27

Someone suggested to me getting the pram out for a nice walk whenever you can is great exercise and can help reduce the baby blues/dumps. However hers was a spring baby ... I'll be battling drizzle and winds. My baby will be weathered and bearded in a yellow captain birdseye outfit and her first words will be "aerr Jim lad".

MrsVWSM28 · 13/09/2014 11:54

Morning all, glad I'm not the only one feeling overly lardy.

My little bean is now 15+2 weeks and has a stupidly sweet tooth. Bag of haribo every day without fail. Why can't my cravings be for salad?!?!

I only have to look at a burger and I put on 4lbs so I'm steering clear of any scales unles I absolutely have to stand on them.

I was so full of good intentions... meh!! x

LottyLikesWindows · 13/09/2014 15:33

Meh! Enjoy your pregnancy and then your baby. I put on 5 stone in my pregnancy. Baby is 8 months old now and I've lost three stone without doing anything special. Will probably have to start exercising now to lose the last two and the jelly belly but it will go too once I set my mind to it.

It's all too easy to get down and depressed about the weight but honestly, it will go sooner or later. Surely this is one time of our lives that we shouldn't worry too much about the way we look. Perhaps I'm just a greedy pig...

weebairn · 13/09/2014 20:22

I put on 2.5 stone with last pregnancy and it all came off within a year without any dieting - I did exercise quite a bit but that's more cause I like exercise and had missed it. I also breastfed for a year and half. It wasn't quick but it did ALL come off, I didn't look any different naked whatsoever, same boobs belly body shape etc. I would have liked it to happen quicker, but hoping for the same after this pregnancy - then this time I can stay that way rather than getting pregnant again straight away!! I lost 1-1.5 st in the first few weeks and I was back in my normal clothes by 6 months but it was the year before I was really truly my original size (especially boobs, mine took a while to go down again with the breastfeeding I guess)

I'm a size 8/10 normally

I don't know whether bf helps weight loss, some of my mates can't keep any weight on while bf and some can't lose any weight bf. Somewhat unfairly, the ones who can't keep the weight on all seem to be the ones who were a bit underweight pre-preg and the ones who can't lose any seem to be the ones who were a bit bigger pre-preg. Bit annoying it doesn't work the other way round! Just anecdotal that of course.

Anyway I am 38 weeks now and also feeling tired big and miserable. No scales this time round, they just depress me!

StarFox21 · 14/09/2014 02:08

I'm 18weeks with second, and I've stopped trying to count my chins, and try not to move to fast as I get wobbles in places I didn't know existed!

LondonSuperTrooper · 14/09/2014 05:18

Another one who didn't lose weight whilst breastfeeding........

pippinleaf · 14/09/2014 07:07

Your messages have made me smile. I feel the same! I love my aqua aerobics but now I can feel my bum bouncing around way toooo much! My husband looks at me naked and says lovely things but I'm sure he's thinking 'wooaahh!' I naively thought my boobs and belly would grow but ... My knees?!

MrsVWSM28 · 14/09/2014 07:30

Ahhh glad I'm not alone! I keep going through phases (the last 15 weeks..) of thinking "screw it, it's the only time in life I'm MEANT to be waddling" and then thinking "oh this poor child is being baked on a diet of haribo". Must eat more greens.
DOH thought it was marvellous that the boob fairy had been - until he realised he wasn't allowed near them. Ouch.

squizita · 14/09/2014 09:01

On a practical note, is it worth buying inexpensive interim clothing for the months after birth (SICK of the sight of maternity leggings and tunics), if so how much/what? Nursing clothing is very not my style so someone suggested plaid shirts with poppers ... as far as I've got ideas wise!

weebairn · 14/09/2014 09:24

Squiz, my post birth wardrobe went like this

weeks 1-2 trackiebottoms/pjs
first couple of months - tights, trainers, short skirts with elasticated waists, looser tops which I found good for breastfeeding (I wear stuff like that normally anyway), cardi (also good for breastfeeding).
around 2-3 months - bought some well fitted jeggings, so I looked kind of like I was wearing jeans but didn't have to cope with a fitted waistband! Continued with oversized funky tops/tshirts/trainers to make me feel a bit less "mum-ish"
around 3 months - a pair of normal jeans and some tops a size up (should have bought this earlier really). By this point I was a breastfeeding pro and could feed in practically any outfit.
around 6 months - could wear my usual clothes again, or most of them

Maybe it was brattish of me but I just could not bear to wear any of maternity clothes, they went straight in a box for next time! I'm not one of those super-groomed new mums you see by any means - I don't wear make up etc - but I liked my fashion and didn't want to just dress purely for function.

As far as breastfeeding goes, a lot of people swear by a vest top under another top - you can pull one up and one down - I never bothered with the vest top and just stuck to loose-ish tshirt tops, you can just pop the baby on underneath with some practise, though I found a cardi/coat useful to pull round the side as she fed, more for the cold in the winter than discretion (you can't see much).
I didn't like shirts as felt exposed getting my boobs out of the top rather than the bottom of my top. But I have big boobs.
The only thing I think it's impossible to wear breastfeeding is dresses with high necklines.

ps. hope all goes well, I think you must be imminent now!!!?

neversleepagain · 14/09/2014 09:41

I put on 22 kgs with my twin pregnancy and when they were 4 weeks I had lost 20kgs.

I didn't breast feed but popping out 12lb of babies and nearly 6lb of placentas helped :)

LIG1979 · 14/09/2014 09:49

Op - I gained 1st in the first trimester and 2.5st overall. Lost it all in ~3 months and then lost another half a stone in the next 3 months without trying. Then spent the rest of my maternity leave trying to not loose any more weight. About half a stone went back on when I stopped breast feeding and went back to work. Interestingly I was still wider in the back and hips till I stopped breast feeding just skinny.

This pregnancy only 9 weeks in an already gained 8lb. Feel huge but eating crap through the nausea helps! Trying to reassure myself the same will happen with this pregnancy too.
