I've been on a roller coaster since day 1 with DC3. Firstly thought I'd had a miscarriage, but went to OB/gyn and discovered I was still pregnant, 9w along. Had spotting for awhile, but DC3 growing well. That all stopped, then this week in the evening I had red blood. Went to OB/gyn the next day, baby still good, no other cause for bleeding obvious, cervix a good length and the only thing she could see was low-lying placenta that may be causing it, something to do with baby's movements. Which may be the case as it's happening at night mainly.

It's been every night now since then, and today some in the day. I have a followup next week with OB/gyn then the following week another followup wiht a consultant.

I guess I'm just asking if anyone has had similar and was there any other cause for bleeding, and/or did your placenta normalise it's position as you got further along? I'm 17w today. I'm in a state of anxiety every day, I'd like to just go to bed for 5mths and get up when DC3 is here. Bloody awful.

Hi, my friend had the same thing and was bleeding pretty heavily. She now has a healthy little boy.
She was told to rest up, no lifting etc and eventually the placenta sorted itself out.
Look after yourself and fingers crossed for you xx

I also have a low lying placenta no bleeding in 2nd trimester but I did from 33-34 weeks. Started bright red but settled to brown for days.

It's scary, I hope it settles soon just rest as much as you can xx

So hard not to worry isn't it? I ordered a Doppler so I can at least ehar baby's heartbeat in between scans and hopefully not worry. I have odd pains as well, hard to tell if they are ligament pains or something else. DH is back from a work trip today so hopefully he will run around after the DC, although they're pretty self sufficient, even if he has jet lag!

I had low lying placenta with dd, just had one small bleed but they signed me off sick until my maternity pay kicked in as I was to be on bed rest, dd was born by elcs at 39 weeks

HerRoyalNotness · 13/09/2014 20:53

How long were you on sick leave purple? I'll have to check how it works here in the US in case my Dr recommends it.

6/7 weeks, bleed was at 22 weeks took my maternity leave at 29 weeks

Ah well. Had a massive bleed today just as I left work, thankfully I can go anytime to see my Dr. She signed me off for the rest of the week and get checked again on Thursday. Was okay over the weekend as I rested fully and I thought that would be the end of it. Not sure what we'll do if this carries on and I'm off work for the duration.

Low lying placenta but luckily moved up in last few weeks so straightforward natural delivery :-)

Well it's still ongoing and consultant has now said my placenta is not particularly low. Have been passing clots and blood still red. I'm on week 3 of bed rest, seeing consultant again this afternoon, I have no idea what to ask them for but I need answers. I get period type pains and each time my dr has checked, cervix still closed. It doesn't seem to be getting better.

Hi all. I've just had my third scan at 32 weeks and 5 days and my placenta seems to have gone from 1.5 cm clear of the os back to 1 cm from the os. Can it actually travel towards the os instead of away? It seems like quite a big discrepancy if not.

No bleeding here but I've had hg so I've spent every afternoon back in bed for 2/3 hours every day since about 12 weeks and not done anything remotely strenuous because otherwise I spend the next day vomiting, which inadvertently seems to have helped me stay asymptomatic. Resting seems to be quite a good idea op.

I hope it goes well for you, it sounds like they are giving you a lot of care and attention so I'm sure you are in good hands

I had a low lying placenta with my first I was given lots of extra scans to check position of it . At 34 weeks I was told it had moved and all was good . Try not to worry Smile

Oh and the "rocg green top guideline no27"is informative and I think the most up-to-date. Sorry I couldn't work out how to link to it but google ought to get you there. There are nice guidelines somewhere but I can't remember how to get at them, will have a look.

Could be a subchorionic hematoma. I had it. Severe, heavy bleeding with huge clots. Happened 6 or 7 times between weeks 9 and 20. I'm 29 weeks now and-touch wood-haven't had any bleeding or spotting for 8-9 weeks now and sonographer said it's resolved.
Scary as this was, the baby was always fine(the Doppler was a huge reassurance for me)
SCH is basically a bleed in the lining of your uterus

Browneyesblue · 02/10/2014 23:24

I had a similar experience. I had episodes of bleeding in the first trimester, and was convinced I was mc at one point. For weeks I had continual spotting and light bleeding, and I was eventually told my placenta was low, and that this was probably the cause. Due to previous miscarriages, I was being scanned every week or so, and there was no other cause found for the bleeding - no sign of a subchorionic hematoma. The bleeding stopped at around 14 weeks.

At 18 weeks I bled very heavily. It was terrifying. An ultrasound showed that the baby was fine, the bleeding stopped and I was eventually sent home. That night I woke up bleeding heavily again, and when I went to the toilet I passed large clots. I went straight back to the hospital, where they told me I was most likely having a mc. I wasn't - to my disbelief, the doppler found a good heartbeat, and an ultrasound in the morning showed that everything was fine. Again, the placenta was assumed to be the problem, as it was low.

At my 20 week scan, the doctor struggled to get the angle that she wanted to look at the placenta. She tried again. Called someone else to try. Tried a TV scan, and eventually sent me to make an appointment to try again the next day with the consultant. I bumped into him in the reception area & took me through for another TV scan. It turned out my placenta wasn't low - it just ran down my side at an odd angle, and that combined with the position of the baby, made the placenta look closer to the cervix than it was.

After the last huge bleed, I didn't bleed again. DS2 is currently fast asleep upstairs (although I'm sure that won't last!)

The consultant said there was no real reason found for what happened - it was just one of those things. Due to my previous issues, I was taking progesterone from about 6 weeks, but in my case it didn't stop the bleeding.

I know how scared you must feel, so wanted to share my happy outcome with you. x

HerRoyalNotness · 03/10/2014 02:21

Thanks all for the happy outcomes. I broke down at the consultant appt today I just feel very stressed out. She is now prescribing progesterone with the view to that helping as baby is fine, she's 14oz (20wks) now and heartbeat is strong and normal. She really stressed to me it's nothing I've done and wants me to remember that when I get down. I go back in 2 weeks and see my dr next week also. I bought a home Doppler so I can hear the heartbeat in between appts which is reassuring. I'm on bed rest for the foreseeable. DH is going home to visit his DD then a work trip directly from there in a few weeks which is worrying as we have no support here. I'm trying not to think about that unsuccessfully

At least I've got out of painting the baby's room, silver linings!

I had bleeds from implantation to 18 weeks - sometimes spotting, sometimes flowing, bright red blood, the odd clot Sad. DC2 is 11 weeks now Smile

It as v v nerve-wracking as I'd had a MC months before. Placenta was low at 20wk scan but the cause of the bleeds was never explained.

No advice other than taking one day at a time and taking heart from all the happy ending stories!

I suffered with placenta Praevia with both DC2 and then DC3.

With DC2 I had been diagnosed at 22 week scan, everything was fine until a bleed at 33.5 weeks. I was admitted, and then bled on and off until a planned section at 37.5 weeks.

With DC3, at the 13 week scan I asked if they could see where the placenta was, when told they couldn't see it, so it was either top or bottom, we guessed it would be PP again, which was confirmed at 21 weeks. I had my first bleed at 24 weeks, followed again at 26 weeks, three bleeds at 31 weeks, followed by a final admission at 33 weeks. I had a big bleed at 36 weeks, whilst an in patient an an emergency section. She was born at 36+1 weighing 5lb 13oz but after a few minutes in a warmer she was fine. She'll be 4 on Monday.
