Worried about what I've eaten this week

Hi, I am 5w pg with DC2 and twice this week have eaten foods that are taboo - both at work functions. Yesterday evening at a work reception I was starving and there were only canapés - I ate one (tiny crostini type thing) even though it probably had soft cheese on it and today, at lunch, while trying to avoid the soft cheese, was halfway through a salmon kebab when I suddenly remembered I'd already had my 2 portions of oily fish earlier this week! Now I feel awful! I think it's because I've had no real symptoms yet so keep forgetting I'm pg!

Anyone got any words of solace they can offer me? I was really careful what I ate when expecting DC1!

What sort of soft cheese was it?

BitchPeas · 12/09/2014 15:51

Honestly, you will be absolutely fine. At 5 weeks there is not even a placenta at work.

hairymonkey · 12/09/2014 15:52

You'll be fine! The chance of catching Listeria are about one in a gazillion, and the salmon will be fine as long as you're not eating that much fish every week. Don't worry!

OooOooTheMonkey · 12/09/2014 15:54

Pretty sure you're allowed soft cheese just not unpasteurised cheese such as Brie and Camembert. Oily fish is good for you I don't think there's a limit on that. It's tuna that you aren't supposed to have more than 2 cans a week of.
Check the NHS website for list of banned foods. It's shorter than you think! Congratulations on your pregnancy and don't worry Smile

Occasionally going over with oily fish is fine. It's an "average". If you're worried just have 1 portion next week to even it out!

Soft cheese is not all forbidden. It's soft rind cheese like brie that is advised against NOT soft spreading cheese like cream cheese. In any case, it is merely because there is a (slight) raised risk of food poisoning rather than anything inherently wrong with the cheese itself! So the vast likelihood is all is fine.

The nhs food guidelines are regularly updated so I just go with them... They advise why, too ... which can alleviate worry.
For example they say no to Mr whippy from a van for hygiene reasons ... but MC flurry is OK because the machines are sterilised daily. Wink

Ignore me. You're right about the fish but like someone said above there's no placenta yet so you'll be fine. Link to NHS site www.nhs.uk/conditions/pregnancy-and-baby/pages/foods-to-avoid-pregnant.aspx v helpful

Thanks all! I feel better already. I don't know what soft cheese it was - i asked the girl handing them out and she shrugged and said "just cheese?!" I read on NHS website that you shouldn't have more than 2 portions of oily fish a week cos of high levels of mercury. But, as you say, there isn't even a placenta in place yet so I'm sure I'm just worrying over nothing.

Most soft cheese will be fine it was probably Philadelphia! And the oily fish is only a guideline, once you're not having tuna with everything or marlin every day, you'll be absolutely fine.

RoganJosh · 12/09/2014 16:04

It would be recognisable as brie/Camembert/rinded goats cheese so it therefore must have been cream cheese or something similar. Which is fine.

Fattyfattyyumyum · 12/09/2014 16:10

The only reason to avoid certain cheeses is due to food poisoning risk. You didn't get ill... Therefore all is fine!!!

KeepSmiling83 · 12/09/2014 17:15

Is that true about McFlurries? I've really fancied one but have only let myself have a spoonful as I heard they weren't allowed?

FruitBadger · 12/09/2014 17:27

Have a look at the NHS list, it's surprising how much of what you hear isn't "official" guidance and is absolutely fine! Smile

FruitBadger · 12/09/2014 17:31

TBH, the NHS list says soft ice cream should be fine as the eggs and milk have been pasturised, there's no mention of any brands at all let alone some being more "ok" than others X

squizita · 12/09/2014 19:56

Fruit that advice was from my mw. She said it's just something to be aware of all the time not just pregnancy ... Confused I guess some vans must be minging.
