I had three cups of tea and a bar of chocolate yesterday and felt really guilty, is this too much?

Stop feeling guilty.
The amount of scaremongering out there drives me nuts.
I'm pregnant for the fifth time, luckily everything seems to be going well this time, 33 weeks, very active baby, everything measuring ok, but I have learnt the hard way that when it comes to mitigating miscarriage risk there isn't much you can do. I have lost babies avoiding caffeine completely, and I have lost babies drinking moderate amounts of tea/coffee.
Decided to have a more relaxed approach this time around, as I don't believe any of my previous history had anything to do with what I ate or drank, how much I exercised etc etc.
Now I do what I feel like on any given day. If I feel like two double lattes and a chocolate one day - fine, some days I have none. I'm just sticking to my pattern pre-pregnancy. For very heavy coffee/tea drinkers there is absolutely a point in cutting down a bit as there is evidence to support that excessive caffeine isn't good for the baby, but three cups is not excessive.
Enjoy your pregnancy - don't sweat the small stuff.

What Mezzaluna said. I have a coffee-shop coffee a few times a week (ie. a strong one) and drink tea as and when I feel like it. Chocolate does have caffeine in it but quite a small amount so you'd have to eat tons of it to have any risk. Baby is healthy, due any day and my pregnancy has been textbook so far.

I think a lot is up to you and your personal tolerance. I find more than 3 coffees in a day makes me a feel a bit ill even when not pregnant. My uni flatmate would drink nuclear strength coffee constantly with no apparent effect, but my dad was admitted to hospital a few years back for caffeine overdose after several espressos (it was a busy day at work and he lost track of how many he'd had Blush).

If you don't feel sick or overly buzzy, I really wouldn't worry.

I used to drink a lot of coffee before becoming pregnant so cut right down. In the first semester I went off coffee anyway but now (16 weeks) I'm having the odd cup again.

3 cups of tea won't do any harm, but a coffee every hour is excessive.

ithoughtofitfirst · 12/09/2014 13:04

About 4-5 cups of tea a day then i switch to decaf.

katiegee · 12/09/2014 13:15

I probably drank about 5-6 cups of tea a day before becoming pregnant (never been much of a coffee drinker). I went clean off tea when I was around 7 weeks pregnant and I'm only just starting to drink it again now at 27 weeks. I'm only drinking one cup a day at the moment, because that's all I want at the moment, can't wait to be drinking it 'normally' again!

Don't feel guilty, three cups of tea and a chocolate bar doesn't sound excessive at all... although I never thought of there being caffeine in chocolate, now am scared to think about the amount of chocolate I eat!

OneLittleToddleTerror · 12/09/2014 13:16

One coffee shop coffee a day. I'm sure it's too much but I can't help it.

TinyMonkey · 12/09/2014 14:26

Two or three cups of tea and as much chocolate as I fancy. Have also had previous losses, but like Mezzaluna, I believe in being relaxed about certain things, and this is one of them.

skyra13 · 12/09/2014 14:54

I'm 11 weeks and I used to drink 6 to 8 cups of tea a day I love tea!
I'd also have a coffee or a mocha sometimes to.

Since becoming pregnant I have cut down to 2 normal teas a day, one in the morning and 1 when I get to work! If I fancy coffee or a mocha that's added on top but not very often, the rest of the day I drink water, juice or decaf tea normally 3 to 5 of them!

PeppermintInfusion · 12/09/2014 14:56

One cup of strongish coffee a say(nespresso/coffee shop coffee), probably one can of diet coke most days and occasionally a cup of tea/instant coffee early evening if I'm at parents/friends. I checked the caffeine limits (sorry don't have the link) and think I was still within it even on a 'bad' day. I don't count chocolate or anything.

I have noticed I an more caffeine sensitive, as I sometimes get a bit of a buzz if the coffee shop stuff is strong.

FruitBadger · 12/09/2014 15:22

3 or 4 mugs of tea per day, occasionally I might have coffee but that'll be instead of rather than in addition to tea, not for any reason just because I don't usually want more than 3 or 4 hot drinks per day. If I do have coffee, it''ll be a coffee shop or filter type, I don't like instant. I do eat chocolate and drink coke but not often because I don't really have a sweet tooth.

I've not changed from what I'd normally have pre-pregnancy at all. I didn't feel my normal consumption levels were so excessive that there was any need for me to do so. I'm currently 30 weeks and have been low risk and no problems to date.

mrsnec · 12/09/2014 15:43

I have gone off tea and coffee mostly but I have a frappuccino or 2 and a full sugar coke per week as a treat. And that's because I'm worried about the sugar more than the caffeine.

My doctor told me to drink more coffee because I was looking tired. I'm in the Eu and caffeine isn't a concern at all here. Although I also decided to keep my intake low in case it made my anxiety worse.

squizita · 12/09/2014 15:58

A tea or a coke a day and a chocolate bar.
I have learned to love costa decaff. Wink The guidelines allow some coffee, so long as you're not chugging cup after cup it should be fine.

squizita · 12/09/2014 15:59

Mezzaluna is 100% right. Smile

Nuttynortherner · 12/09/2014 16:07

I have 4-6 cups of tea a day and don't intend to cut down (I don't like coffee so never drink it). I need a cuppa to wake me up on a morning and make sure I can function at work. Both DM and MIL say 'it never did me any harm' though I appreciate things have changed! My issue is that to remove the caffeine from tea involves copious amounts of chemicals so I stick to regular tea with occasional Rooibos in the evening

eastmidswarwicknightnanny · 12/09/2014 16:35

Up until 20weeks I had 2 cups of tea occasionally 3 and occasional choc or glass coke and now I have what I want I never drink more than 3-4 cups tea a day anyway.

Naomip88 · 12/09/2014 16:46

I'm 21 weeks and I started by cutting it out completely but then a nurse friend of mine told me she still drinks 5 cups of tea a day so I've relaxed a bit about this. I can't drink my usual super strong espresso laden black coffee as it makes me feel rushy and weird but 3-4 cups of tea sounds about right to me! My mum drank an excessive amount of coffee through all three of her pregnancies as she didn't know better so I think you'll be grand :-). If you're worried though maybe get some nice decaff tea in.
