And they don't want to scan me again. Should I be concerned?

Surely that's within the lines on your growth chart? How about your other measurements? Baby should be following the lines upwards. Mine was estimated at 4.6lb at a scan this week (also 34 weeks) and they're fine with that so long as she keeps growing steadily (we shall see, DS decided to stop growing for a while at this gestation!!).

FamiliesShareGerms · 12/09/2014 06:34

I'm a little confused - why would they need to scan you again? (My baby was under 5 lb at 35 weeks when he was born, which put him at just over 7lb at term on the growth charts )

Notso · 12/09/2014 06:50

That doesn't seem too big they estimated DS2 at around 7lb at 34 weeks, he was born at 37 weeks and was 9lb.

florencedombey · 12/09/2014 06:53

I was 5lb when I was born at full term. I'm fine!

melonribena · 12/09/2014 06:54

My ds was 5.5lb at 31 weeks when u had a scan. He was 9lb 9.5oz at 40+6 weeks!

FlipFlopWaddle · 12/09/2014 06:57

That sounds about right for 34 weeks (ex scbu nurse), what is it you're concerned about?

(My dds were 6lb 10 at 39 weeks and 6lb 9 at 37 and both were fine)

Fragglewump · 12/09/2014 06:57

I'm not sure what your concern is? Are you worried your baby is too small? These estimations are rubbish! And the last few weeks is when the baby packs on the pounds.......... My daught was 5lb 4 when she was born at 37 weeks and she's just fine. I'm sure everything will be fine op.

OneLittleToddleTerror · 12/09/2014 07:13

I'm not sure what your concern is either. If your child is born at full term and weigh over 2.5kg, you will be discharged. Yours is already over that at 34 weeks. Why would they scan you again!

OneLittleToddleTerror · 12/09/2014 07:15

You can see the numbers here

tomanyanimals · 12/09/2014 07:50

Mine was suppose to be 5lb he was 7lb11 so don't just go off that

RJnomore · 12/09/2014 07:51

Are you worried its too big or too small?

frankiebuns · 12/09/2014 07:53

My dd was 4lb 9 at 34 week scan she was born at 38 weeks at 6lb 2.5oz

bebebringingup · 12/09/2014 10:43

I'm concerned the baby will be too big. If she is already almost 6lbs and I've got another 6 weeks potentially to go, then surely she has the potential to be huge? It's at the top of the growth chart.

bebebringingup · 12/09/2014 12:00

Sorry thats the weight she is already! Not what they predict her to be!

KeepSmiling83 · 12/09/2014 13:36

Don't they estimate half a pound a week? So if she is 6lb now then in another 6 weeks she could be 3lb heavier so 9lb? I wouldn't have thought they would have been worried about a 9lb baby?

squizita · 12/09/2014 16:39

The growth slows down! Mine was growing fast at 34 weeks, then continued to grow but slower. She is now (40 weeks) estimated at a petite but healthy 6 1/2 lb. Smile

Branleuse · 12/09/2014 16:44

my ds1 was 6lb 2 when he was born at 35 weeks.
I remember noting that he weighed 9lb on his due date, but i dont know if that means much

RJnomore · 12/09/2014 18:35

I have no experience of big babies or even going to term but remember in three weeks time you will be counted as full term, is there a history of big babies in your family?

Also th scans are not always very accurate regarding size....

NorksEnormous · 12/09/2014 18:47

Take those measurements with a pinch of salt!! I was told at 36 weeks to expect a ginormous baby, that dd was already off the chart and was 8lb. I was sectioned at 39 weeks, had 3-6 month babygrows with me to fit my enormous baby and they lifted out a teeny tiny 6lb 10 baby! She would have fitted in the sleeve of her baby grows I brought with me! Wink

WhyOWhyWouldYou · 12/09/2014 19:20

Norks that was seriously out! Bloomin eck. I knew they werent vastly accurate but was under the impression it was more like 1lb either way depending on how much body fat they had, not a few lb as it must have been for you.

OP if your really worried just keep going on about how worried you are to the midwife and really push for another one.

My son had gone from midway on the charts at 20w to top of the charts at 28w, but was only 7lb2oz when born.

WhyOWhyWouldYou · 12/09/2014 19:24
  • to be clear, when i said push for another one, i meant push for another growth scan.
SchroSawMargeryDaw · 12/09/2014 19:33

DS1 estimated to be 9 1/2 -10lb at term, was born at 38+2 a teeny 6lb 1oz.

DS2 was 4lb 8oz when he was born at 35 weeks but had stopped growing at least a couple of weeks previous, so you sound like you're baby is about the right size? (that is of course if they aren't completely out).

Want2bSupermum · 12/09/2014 19:43

The fact you have taken the time to post on here tells me you are concerned. I would be asking/demanding for another scan at 39wks if you have not already delivered. Listen to your body and act on your concerns.

MrTumblesBavarianFanbase · 12/09/2014 19:50

I was strongly encouraged to have a c-section with DC2 (following Emergency section with DC1) because scans predicted DC2 would be around 11lb. He was 8lb 6...

squizita · 12/09/2014 20:03

6 lb isn't clinically too small either. :)
Just in case (as with me) your 5 lb whopper at 34 weeks turns into a prediction of 6-7 lb at term.
People calling it "tiny" on MN got me very worried. The staff at my large maternity unit We're nonplussed and said it was quite normal for a short lady to have a short baby and my growth prediction is perfectly appropriate.

Weirdly I was measuring big before, but as with all natural things it varies. Consultant decided mine had got long enough for her DNA early then settled to laying down fat and "baking". Grin
