UTI in pregnancy

Hi,

Even before I was pregnant I was very prone to UTIs, so neurotically kept urinalysis sticks in.

I've been suffering with back pain the past few days, so tested my wee this morning, and the stick showed blood in it although there's no visible blood.

I can't get a GP appointment, they're maxed out with people going back to school, so where's the best place to go? Start with midwife? Walk in centre?

Ring NHS direct or go to your doctors and don't take no for an answer. My doctors are the same, and offered me a telephone appointment and I stood there, told them I thought I had a UTI and that after my phone appointment if be told to come in anyway, and they gave me one. My UTI was a borderline kidney infection ( back pain is a sign that it could have spread) and left untreated, it can cause premature labour. I ended up going to hospital and having my antibiotics fed through a drip to get them into my system quicker. I don't know how far along you are but UTI's are serious during pregnancy and you need to be seen today, even if only to get you a prescription for antibiotics.
If you are over 25 weeks, maybe phone the labour ward and explain all of this to them, but please don't leave it too late.

Awesome advice -I'm 23 weeks, and definitely keen to avoid premature labour. Last stick showed no blood. Weird ....

Midwife or walk-in GP (google your local one) - you might have to wait an hour but you'll get a prescription.

The risk of premature labour is low but kidney infections can land you in hospital anyway if they get bad during pregnancy so you want to get a prescription ASAP. Did you say 'pregnant with suspected uti' when making an appointment? I was under the impression they were key words (certain things they always see same/next day).

I tried out of hours for this recently and they were great. I'd try MW first then NHS direct for an OOH or walk in referral.

Hi CatteLady, I hope you have managed to get something sorted by now, but if not I agree with the others that you should call your GP back and tell them you are pregnant and possibly have a UTI. As we all know a UTI can't be left untreated incase it develops into a kidney infection. I had a suspected uti/kidney infection at the beginning of my pregnancy at around 5 weeks and managed to get a 7 day antibiotic course which are safe to take in pregnancy. Do you have your midwives telephone number? You could try them or then the last step is a trip to the hospital! Good luck x

I think it was definitely a blip...Will keep testing though.

I just dropped a pee sample off at my docs reception the nurse tested it then phoned me. They should prioritise you!
