potentially really really dump question re baby's movements...

....as a rational human being am a little bit embarassed about asking this question but here goes...

Am almost 32wks pg with DC2 and this pregnant has been VERY different to DS. One of the things that's been different is the 'style' of the baby's movements. With DS I didn't feel anything until about 24 weeks and then it all felt like pretty 'standard' kicks and turns and wiggles.

But with this baby, the movements feel so different and, well, weird! It's more like the baby is shuddering all over, or twitching. There are the more obvious ones where its clearly shifting around and I can feel something grinding against my ribs, or groin or wherever, as it shifts and turns around in there, but more often than not it feels like its shaking, or just tumbling around randomly.

It also gets a lot of what I asume are hiccups, which I know are normal and a good sign that everything is developping etc, but they last for ages and I can feel them all over the baby/bump, rather than where you'd expect the face/throat to be...

I know that all babies are different, and who knows really what the little beast is doing in there, but is it possible - and this is the bit am slightyl embarassed to ask... - to know if there is something wrong with the baby, just by its types of movements...? Could it have epilepsy for example...?

There, I said it. I'm a crazy, paranoid, irrational phycho hose beast of a pregnant lady...

I had this with dd2 but not dd1. Now she's here I can only assume the shuddering thing is the little jump she still dies now (kind of like someone "walking on your grave" if you know that phrase where you are!)

And yep - she still gets lots of hiccups!

Is there any other type?! Wink

My baby had hiccups during one of the scans and i could see that it made every part of him twitch, not just his face/throat. They sent his arms and legs flailing!

Topsyloulou · 11/09/2014 09:21

My baby gets hiccups all the time & I feel it where his back / chest is. I have an anterior placenta and have never really felt any arm movements but I get plenty of kicks. I also get the shuddering thing a couple of times a day. I'm 39+6 now and he is moving more than ever.

Hiccups happen in the chest... you feel them in your throat but from the outside they show lower. My mw had to point that out to me! :)

Scoobsmam13 · 11/09/2014 14:08

Movements for me with this baby are so different to my first. I remember the shuddering with DD1 but not this one (yet), and with DD1 hiccups all the time and all over my bump. I thought there was something wrong too.

She is now 6 and still to this day gets hiccups all the time (but thats because she is a cheeky monkey who drinks too fast and giggles too much!)

blamber · 11/09/2014 14:42

This is my first and I'm getting really paranoid about the baby's hiccups! I guess overall he doesn't have it often, 4-5 a day, but last night he got it twice when I rolled over to my other side in bed which I thought was odd! I don't know why but feeling hiccups makes me feel uneasy and worried there's something wrong.

squizita · 11/09/2014 15:10

Blamber they get them all the time. They basically drink and pee fluid constantly (gross but true! Later they digest the downy hair that falls off their body and some of the greasy coating on their skin, which becomes their first poo). Inevitably they hiccup! :)

flipflopsonfifthavenue · 11/09/2014 15:36

hiccups are good, shows that they're developping everything they need to to breathe outside :)

what is less good is grinding kicking so hard and sudden that it actually makes you cry out at your desk and the whole office turns to stare at you....

Good to know its all normal!

Bellyrub1980 · 12/09/2014 01:56

I genuinely googled whether the baby could be having some kind of fit. Because it feels like that sometimes, a proper shuddering/shivering sensation. I can't remember finding anything but have since spoken to a few friends who said they felt the same kind of thing. I'm 34 weeks and haven't felt it for a few weeks now and the kicks are definitely more obvious.

Maybe the position of your placenta is different this time?

hartmel · 12/09/2014 03:41

My son had hiccups very often.. Now he is 12 month old and still gets them.. Especially when he giggles a lot. Which he does all day! Grin

He also had silent reflux for the first 4 month. Our doctor told us it is normal for baby's that had a lot of hiccups in the belly will have silent reflux once they are born..

cookielove · 12/09/2014 05:06

I didn't realise ds was hiccupping in yhe womb, he does it all the time now he's out and he is very twitchy too!
