Can anyone help me with what to buy for new born.

I haven't a clue where to start, we have bought a Tommee Tippee steriliser which comes with the following:

One set with everything you need including:
Electric Steam Steriliser
Bottle warmer
4 260ml bottles
4 150ml bottles
2 thermal travel bags
2 medium flow teats
6 milk powder dispensers
1 bottle brush
1 pair of teat tongs
1 pure new born soother.

I don't know how many bottles/teats to get.

Clothes/shoes don't know where to start, we have bought a Minnie Mouse dress with booties and tights, a pack of sleep suits, 6 bibs.

We have chosen our nursery furniture set, moses basket and travel system. What bedding shall we get/mattress?

I sound really stupid I know but as this is our first we don't really know where to start.

I have looked for books with this information but can't find anything nor on the internet.

Thanks Louise.

Exactly, in the end having a healthy baby is all that matters. I didn't argue at all with the doctors when they wanted formula via tube for my DD. I know that's the right thing to do. By the way, if you are going to have another, you might it to be an excellent 'sucker'.

Not exactly for a new born but I wish I'd bought a kindle for me-really useful for late night feeds! Please bear in mind that the shops will be open the day after you give birth!! Our baby was smaller than we anticipated at 6lb 5oz and new born stuff was massive on him so we just bought some smaller vests and sleepsuits when we got home-really glad it wasn't the other way around though- a friend bought LOADS of newborn things then had a 10lb-er and it's all still unused!
Sarah's views are narrow minded and TOTALLY uncalled for. She said in her first post that it is none of her business and she's right it isn't. You really won't come across people like that in real life. Most people are nice! I'd second some cartons of milk for at home too so there's always some ready if needed.
And muslins. We've used LOTS of muslins.

PinkAndBlueBedtimeBears · 11/09/2014 16:55

I second the lots of muslins comments, we currently have 25 and still occasionally run out.. I do a white wash every other day! As many as you can get your hands on....

natharley11 · 12/09/2014 07:27

my lo was 9 lb at 38 weeks so took all newborn back only for him to arrive and 0- 3 months be massive despite him being 9lb 6
so def a mixture of the two and most places like asda tesco will exchange baby stuff regardless of tags.
The bottles I had about 6- 8 for formula feeding and got the same . and bought some of the pre made stuff for first few days to help establish ourselves.
I be bottle feeding this time too and my v healthy three year old has no way been effected x

I have a 12 day old baby. We were given lots of clothes as hand me downs and presents. Stock up on nappies, wipes and maternity pads. If you need a c section then make sure you get knickers that pull up well onto your belly (I got mine from Sainsburys).

Don't worry about the feeding, people are hugely judgemental when it comes to formula vs breast. Do what is best for you and your baby and as their mother you know that. People like Sarah must realise that what they say can be extremely hurtful to mothers who chose not to or can't breastfeeds for whatever reason but appear to get a kick out of appearing superior to others.

OneLittleToddleTerror · 12/09/2014 12:25

Actually if you exclusively breastfeed, you'll also get judgemental comments from others. Along the lines of making a rod for you back, you must give a bottle of formula so the baby sleeps through, it's digusting to do it in front of people/in public spaces, etc. You can never win as a mother. Everyone wants to put their nose in and comment. I don't know why people feel the right to be so judgemental.

I second lots and lots of maternity pads! For at least 3 weeks.

Ladies and Louise thank you one and all for this sage, wise and useful thread. As another FTM who is both nervous and excited it's been highly informative. Leaky little fuckers, ehy? Best stock up on those muslins then! This type of advice and support is what MN does best. Thank you.
