Employment advice anyone?!

Ok so I'm currently awaiting my dating scan (exciting times) and am being made redundant by my current employer with a job lined up ready to start as soon as.
My new employers do not know I'm pregnant as of yet however I understand I do not legally have to tell them until I'm 20 weeks but am planning in telling them after my dating scan. Anyway, my current employer has served all of us with our 12 week notice and I was under the understanding I could still be paid my redundancy and start my new job without a problem following conversations with my team leader and manager. However on the notice letters it states leaving prior to the end of the notice period would mean forgoing redundancy and I'm not in a position to do this as I will be getting a substantial pay out as have been with my current employer for a number of years.

Now I feel like I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place!

Anyone been through anything similar? I really don't know if I should start the new job and risk them not keeping me on when they find out I'm pregnant with no money to back me up with or do I wait out for the redundancy payment and have no job to go to after?!

Thanks for reading!

If it was me, I would get the redundancy payment then start the new job. Not tell them I was pregnant,And just see what happened after the time I had to tell them as they can't ask you.
How long is your probationary period if any at your new job?

Fairey86 · 08/09/2014 15:06

Probationary period is 6 months according to the contract :/ am just worried it's going to delay things even longer if I can't start sooner and then I may have a more noticeable bump by the end of Novemeber xx

If they have accepted you in the new job they cant get rid of you if you are pregnant there are law that stop this!
Personally if I was you id wait for the money also if you have worked for them a while you are entitled to that money.
I'm currently in a seasonal job with the hopes that is be able to stay over the winter period that's how it had been made out to me, but since I have told them in pregnant I have been told they have extended my contract till the end of October but my manager then said you wont want to work after that will you so I'm assuming they are letting me go! I can't really argue it either kinda sucks as I'm 0 hour contract!

Good luck with it Smile

Tell your new employer your unable to start until x date and ask if theyll wait? But yes i believe its normal for a company making redundant to not give payout if you start new job prior to the redundancy date, as they can then count it as a resignation from you, rather than them needing to terminate your contract and make you redundant.

Id also wait as long as possible to tell new employer your pregnant and join a union as a back up.

Thank you all for replying! Going to wait it out and see what happens :/ ah well everything happens for a reason :)

When do you plan to start your new job? I was in a similar situation a few months ago- i negotiated an earlier redundancy date. With these things the official party line is different from what you'll be told off the record. Did you hand in your notice? Are they aware you have a new job to go to?

Also I think you don't actually have to tell them until 15 weeks before your due date, which could give you some more time.
