This will be a bit of a moan so feel free to ignore Smile

So, had an extra scan at 32 weeks last week because when I had my 20 week scan my placenta was low. Was told not to worry about it as it would probably move so I didn't.

At the scan last week however, my placenta has not moved enough Sad
It's only 1.9cm from my cervix and they want it to be at least 2.5cm so I'm being rescanned in two weeks time. Consultant said if it hasn't moved enough they'll be thinking about a c-section Hmm

While they were checking my placenta, they also did a check on baby's growth (I'm under consultant care due to hypothyroidism) and baby's tummy is measuring RATHER large. Also baby is already 5lb 2 Shock so my nightmares of having a large baby seem to be coming true.

As a result of large measurements I've now (on top of everything else) been referred for a glucose tolerance test before next scan. I'm really trying not to worry, but I haven't had the best pregnancy (sickness, back/hip pain) and feel like the problems are starting to mount up.

Sorry for rambling. Hubby is good at putting on a 'not worried, hospital are looking after you' front which stops me worrying too much but in am still worrying. I can't help it!

So, any experience of glucose tolerance test or gestational diabetes? Is this because I've eaten too many sweet things and I could have avoided it?

Hey, I'm sorry I have no experience in this as I'm only early on but I wish you the best! Just a tip though try not to google anything (I had a habit of doing this with having a hematoma) and nothing good really comes out of it! Everybody's different, but I'm sending hugs and hope everything works out ok Thanks

There is still a lot of stretching of the lower uterus between 32 weeks and full term. It is highly likely your placenta will move, but if it hasn't quite moved 0.6cm in the next two weeks request a re-scan at 36 weeks or before delivery.

I had low lying with dd2 which moved and grade 4 placenta praevia with percreta with ds. There is some information here about placenta praevia, but I can answer any questions you may have. There were 5 ladies including myself in the ante-natal ward with praevia in my third trimester, all of us and our babies were fine despite several babies arriving early.

Size does not always mean GD, with ds I was huge and he was 99th centile plus for everything. I was checked twice for GD, but he was just a massive baby. He was 7.5lb's when delivered at 34+5 weeks!

GD can be controlled by diet and exercise in most cases. My friend had it during her pregnancy, diet and walking worked well to bring her levels down. Try to stick to low GI foods and keep active. Make sure you always eat a good breakfast so you are less likely to snack on sweet foods mid morning.

Thanks guys.

Yeah Roseylee20 I've stopped googling as you only find the worst!

AnotherStitchInTime I am hoping that it's just a big baby and not gestational diabetes. Already cut down on the sugary foods (not that I eat TOO many) and waiting for the hospital to ring with the date of the test.
Sonographer did say my uterus needs to grow/stretch a bit more and placenta SHOULD move, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed!

We were told our baby was off the scale and would be over ten pounds but she actually was 7lb 5 and I went neatly two weeks over. Another woman in the ward was told her baby was measuring small and he was over 8lbs. Almost all the babies were between seven and eight pounds despite a big range of predictions!

DeputyPecksBentBeak · 07/09/2014 18:18

My DD's abdominal measurement was really big too (on a couple of scans) and I had other risk factors (two of my immediate family have diabetes) but I was absolutely fine.

I have GD for 2nd time. It's annoying and I'm always worrying. Baby's gummy is measuring on 93rd centile(I'm 25 weeks) so I seem to be cooking a sumo wrestler!
I'm watching what I eat as best I can.
There's no reason for me getting GD apart from my dad having type 2. I'm usually a 5'2", 7.5 stoner!
Have the GT test and just see what they say. Try not to worry as they'll keep a close eye in baby's growth from now in so will no doubt anticipate any problems and intervene if necessary.
Look at me being all rational!!

Just saw this on Facebook. It may help :)

I had GD, ended up on insulin at night as my fasting sugars kept going up but generally controlled it with diet.
I had to be very strict with carbs which wasn't fun but easily managed. I was terrified DS would be huge but scans predicted he'd be about 7-8lbs. In the end he was a tiny 6lb 3oz.
He's 11 months now and very healthy. I had a post natal GTT when he was 12 weeks and my insulin had gone back to normal.

I have GD, and have been told it's nothing to do with your diet pre-pregnancy or during - all to do with pregnancy hormones and how they affect your body's ability to use the insulin it produces. My baby's on 50th centile despite me having to take insulin 4 times a day. The reason they're sending you for the GTT is due to the large abdominal measurement, which can be an indicator of GD.
