Blood Results

I've had a fairly uneventful pregnancy. At around 28 weeks my bloods showed my iron was a little low, I got a call from the surgery receptionist to tell me this and to say I need to get my bloods done again in two weeks to check it wasn't a one off. Fine, bloods re-done, definitely anaemic, cue a call from the receptionist 'you need to collect an iron prescription'. Duly collected prescription and took tablets, no real advice given at any point though. At my midwife appointment I queried it and she said it was very borderline and just to take the tablets.

Had bloods again this week (I'm 37 weeks now) as I'd complained of itchy hands. Got a call, from the receptionist again, saying the results indicate a problem with my liver function and I need to have the test again next week to be sure it's not a one off. I explained I already have a scheduled appointment next week with the midwife so will be sure my blood is taken again. I asked if I need to be aware of anything else and she said no. However, after googling, (I know I know I shouldn't) this is quite serious. I intend to deliver in a midwifery led unit and could realistically go into labour at any time now. Liver function problems could mean I need consultant led care in a hospital. My question - is this how other people get their blood results? I am now just worried, she called me to say I need a retest but I'm seeing the midwife anyway, I've gained nothing from that call but stress. And does everyone always have a retest 'in case it's a one off'? It's quite late in my pregnancy to just wait a week and see surely?

I got the call quite late today and it's now the weekend so I can't even call the surgery and ask to speak to a midwife or doctor.

Any advice, opinions welcome.

You need to be tested again soon to see if this is icp (aka obstetric cholastasis) and what your liver results are. If you have icp, you need regular monitoring, blood tests, medication and the baby should be delivered prior at 38 wks.

sadly not all midwives and health care professionals are as clued up on icp as they should be.

Google icp support. Fab website for advice.

I'm having a home birth but am anaemic and have been having my blood done regularly recently (37+4). It's always with my midwife and never through GP. Why not call midwife led unit (always staffed usually) for advice. Or ZNHS Direct?

I would phone the delivery suite, they can access your bloods and advise you from there.

Thanks for the responses ladies. My concern is I'm already 37+2 and I've read I'd need to be induced by 38 so I'm quite short on time here and being recommended a retest at 38 weeks.

I've just called the birthing unit and asked for some advice, I'm waiting for a call back now.

Can anyone say how they get their blood results? Is via the receptionist after hours common practice or should I be complaining?

my bloods were done at hospital and I called them for results.

Just an update...the unit called me back this AM and requested I attend on Monday for a repeat test rather than wait the week. Then, about twenty mins after the call I felt like I was having contractions. It went on all day. Around 8pm the birthing unit just happened to call again and said after their changeover on shift they had a chat about me and would rather I go to Hosptial straight away just for some monitoring. Well the doctor their confirmed a diagnosis of ICP which means no birthing unit for me. Possible induction required Monday. Midwife offered a sweep which I accepted and I'm already 1-2 cm dilated. Been contracting all night and now on my tens machine. Hoping baby will make an appearance on his own rather than induction, I really really don't want to be induced! So anyway, I'm knackered already and have got a loooong way to go! Wish me luck :)

Good luck Honeybear!

My consultant told me labour with ICP babies can be quite quick

Hoping for a quick and safe delivery!

isabella you were not wrong! After my waters broke he was here within about 2.5 hours. All felt very quick to me! DS was born yesterday at 7.39, three weeks early but still seven pound eleven.
