Help with swaddle blankets/pods

I would like to try swaddle blankets/pods this time. I'm due 1st Jan but its been brought forward to end of November as I'm having triplets at 35wks.

So its winter time and I thought long sleeve vest, baby gros swaddle blanket or pod. Will I also need a blanket depending on which one I get. Here are the ones I've seen.

I didn't use any blankets last time but that's because DD couldn't keep them on. Still can't and she's 3yo. What I did was just add more clothes underneath if needed. And also guideline is to have room at 18-20C so it won't ever be too cold. I kept the heating on overnight when DD was a wee baby. But she's a PFB :)

I never needed more than long sleeve body suit and baby gro and grobag with a 18C room.

Sorry it is 16-20C. I have a lot more problem keeping it cool enough over summer tbh. DD was down to nappies only as the room got to like 27C

Thanks for the reply, we have one of those gros eggs that tell u the temp so I'm sure that will help keep us right!

My dd is currently sleeping in along sleeve onesie and a love to dream swaddle (which I highly recommend). She has one layer of cellular blanket overnight. She's 8 weeks.

As a newborn over the summer she was either naked or wearing a vest and sleeping in a swaddlepod (again, highly recommend). I guess in winter I'd have had her in a long sleeve onsie and maybe a vest with a blanket or two overnight.

Try and get swaddles with zips, they are so much easier than the Velcro ones.

Thanks, I've put the love to dream swaddle on my amazon wishlist along with the swaddle podsSmile

I've just bought some bambino merino blankets, you can use them for swaddling when newborn but after a couple of months when no longer swaddling they can be used as blankets. The shaped swaddle s don't allow this

By the way, the lullaby trust has some guidelines on swaddling because it's linked to SID when undone in an unsafe way. (Same with slings and both are very popular in the UK currently).

The recommendation is use thin materials for swaddling only to avoid overheating. For this reason I would stay clear of merino ones.

I think I will stick with the already made up ones. Wouldn't want to risk anything happening.

DS hated the merino one, as he could kick and wriggle in it. That was supposed to be a pro of a stretchy fabric but Ds hated that aspect. The large light muslins (e.g. Aden and Anais) were a revelation - they completely tied him up and he would fall asleep as soon as we swaddled him!

eastmidswarwicknightnanny · 05/09/2014 19:02

The huge sized muslins have become v v popular for swaddling over pad yr I have noticed and I have brought some myself to do the same and then they have a multitude of other uses once no longer used for swaddling. I got mine from marks Spencer but noticed aldi had some in today

I have the giant square muslins fot swaddling but we werr also bought a Groswaddle which was amazing! Dd was swaddled til 5mo so they were financially worth it (we got Aidan and Ananis muslins at £££)

FloweryBoots · 05/09/2014 19:29

I tried a mother care swadle blanket which looks similar to the love to dream swaddle and really struggled with it. However, I had a swaddle pod and it was AWSOME! No hassel, just zip 'em in e viola! I really rate it. DD was born early March, in a v cold March, and I liked that we had a really light weight summer swaddle and could put a blanket over her too so temperature was more easily adjusted than in a heavier weight swaddle.

Bolshybookworm · 05/09/2014 19:48

We swaddled until 5 months (then had to give it up as she got too wriggly). My favourite was the groswaddle- could easily swaddle the arms whilst leaving the legs free and could get it pretty tight. Our baby wriggled out of the ( M&P) zip up swaddle within a couple of months, I thought it was a bit useless. I couldn't get her arms tightly swaddled using the giant muslins either, but maybe I just wasn't using them correctly. My baby is WRIGGLY! The groswaddle was a godsend in stopping the startle reflex from waking her, we became quite dependent on it (lets not talk about what happened when she grew out of it.....).

YY to setting the heating so you don't need to stress about layers and blankets. It will only be for a few months, then you can go back to turning it off at night when they graduate to a sleeping bag or blankets.
