If you were told you were likely to have a huge baby and you were offered a C Section would you have one?

I had an extra scan today as the baby has unlateral talipes/clubfoot and the consultant wants to do another growth scan at 36 weeks due to the large measurements taken today.

All the head measurements are off the scale and abodominal circumfrence is at 95th percentile. DH was 10lbs 8 and has a v large head, he was delvered via CS. My brother is 6'5 (and was one of the longest babies ever born in our hosiptal). I'm not small at all at 5'9 and pre pg was size 14-16. However my mum had fast labours and tearing so I'm quite worried about this potential giant I might be having.

If you had the option would you take them up on a section? Thanks

I would go CS too. In fact I did. DS was breech up until the last couple of weeks but changed position. By that time the CS had already been booked and he was measuring very large too. Having had previous miscarriages I also preferred the 'known complications' that could arise with a CS rather than the more unknown ones of a VB. CS went well and recovery was good.

This is a very small sample but so many people I have known who had a massive bump like me but were not particularly tall or wide of hip ended up having a CS after labouring for a long time anyway. So I feel I would have got one anyway! But I will never know of course.

I am slightly envious of those people who have lovely natural births knowing I will never have one (for DS2 am choosing CS again too) but they haven't been through what I went through with previous pregnancy losses and a shed load of medication and I would again rather have the known problems that can arise than the unknown IYSWIM.

My DS2 measured big through the pregnancy, I laboured for about 15/16 hours with 1 1/2 hours pushing and I couldn't get him out and I ended up emergency section he was 9lb 6. The section was ok xx

I ended up with a emcs for this reason so yes
ds was 9 lb 6 and a half and I am a tiny size 6. I had 19 hours in labour to then have a emcs as would not come down birth canal . def worth considering

Due to health problems I had I was booked in for a c-section anyway which was decided at 21 weeks. I was having 4 weekly growth scans due to my health and baby was off the chart - when plotted on the charts he was over the 100th percentile each time. I am only petite, weighing 8.5 stone, and my bump was huge!!

My midwife explained to me that the growth charts aren't generic and each women has one that is individual to her based on her pre-pregnancy weight. She said that if I wasn't having a c-section anyway they'd be offering me one based on the predicted size of the baby in relation to my frame.

DS was born at 39 weeks and was 8lb 8oz which although isn't huge they said if I'd gone to term or gone over and had a vaginal birth I probably would have struggled to get the baby out.

A friend of mine, who is also of a very small frame, ended up having an EMCS due to her baby getting stuck during labour and getting distressed - her DD came out at 8lb 3oz which was classed as big for her frame. When she fell pregnant again she had an ELCS because the baby was predicted to be the sane size, which it pretty much was.

In your position I'd take the section!!

I was offered a c-section with ds1 due to size, he was predicted to be 10 pounds+ and I was showing no signs of labour, I absolutely didn't want to be induced as I had heard that increased the chance of complications with big babies.

I eventually went into labour naturally and it was a fairly easy labour, ds was born weighing 10 pounds and although I had a 2nd degree tear (he came out after 2 pushes, I think that's why I tore) the recovery was really straightforward. I didn't have any wee issues after the birth and everything went back to normal pretty quickly.

I personally would choose a c-section over induction, but I am glad I gave birth a chance, although I'm pregnant with dc2 now and I'm slightly concerned that this one will be bigger!
