Is a membrane sweep done there and then at 41 weeks or do we book an appointment?

Hi folks.
On Monday 1st September it will be the 41 week midwife appointment, I know the midwife will offer a sweep, but does that mean she does it there an then, or is it an offer of an appointment later in the week?

Usually there and then, it's very quick

I've been told I'll be induced at 41 weeks (36 at moment). I don't want to be, so community midwife suggested I book an appointment for a sweep at 40. I left the clinic without booking it. I think she only suggested a specific appointment because otherwise I wouldn't get one with her (consultant led).

In my area you have to go to the hospital for a sweep at 40 weeks but the midwife will do it at your 41 week appointment

Normally there and then in both areas I have lived in.

Is it possible to ask for an appointment later in the week?
Ideally we'd like to try natural ways before the sweep - but not until we reach September!

It's September on Monday!

But wondering the same thing myself as I'm 40 weeks now and no idea what they do round here!

You don't want to be moving appointments at this stage. They will want to check on you.

You just say that you don't want a sweep at the 41 week appointment. Most areas they will want to see you again before 42 weeks and you just say you'll have the sweep then. I had one at 41+5.

DoctorRock · 30/08/2014 23:20

That's what I was hoping for Penguin, we want to get to September if that's nature's way. Then it would be good to bring on labour without a sweep, but a sweep is preferable to induction.

Well, I don't know about all areas, but my MW would have been fine with that. I declined a sweep at 41 weeks but said I'd think about it later. She saw me again at 41+5 (just for a general check up) and I agreed. Mostly because I'd had early labour signs for a coupld of days so I wasn't so worried about a nudge possibly setting off a long latent stage.

WiggleGinger · 31/08/2014 21:19

She will likely just perform it during your appointment. ( providing you agree!)
I had one at 38+6 and one at 40 weeks.
I'm still pregnant 40+3.
Was offered another yesterday by hospital midwife after going in for heartbeat trace, I politely declined. I'm not against them I just decided not to.
