Asprin in pregnancy

Hi everyone.

I`m 13 weeks pregnant and my midwife has suggested I start taking aspirin to prevent high blood pressure as its my first and my mum had high blood pressure.

I haven't started taking it yet though as for others the advice is not to take aspirin. I`m so confused on what do do as I don't like the thought of taking tablets whilst pregnant.

Anyone else had the same advice? What did you do?

Thanks

Thanks for all the info guys. Have been to get my prescription a week ago but still haven't dared take it! Need to man up! So worried it's going to harm my little baby though.

Sophie It won't harm your baby. If it harmed babies they wouldn't give it to recurrent miscarriers (ie the people most likely to lose babies) would they?

The premise that you take your medication on your HCP advice is the same whether pregnant or not. You shouldn't not do something because a friend or stranger on the web did/didn't. You have never seen their medical notes, and do not know their situation. As for people with reactions - some people are allergic to certain medications, it doesn't mean everyone else shouldn't take them.

High blood pressure is very dangerous to you and your baby, if you are at risk of it. If the MW wants you to go on low dose aspirin then go for it.

BTW low dose aspirin can be prescribed, but tastes foul. Many 'pound' stores and low-cost chemists do it for £1 gastro-coated, far more pleasant to take. :) Take it with a meal because it can cause a gripy stomach otherwise.
