Nursery bedding.... What do you need?!

Hiya, just starting to think about colours for the nursery and thought that, partly, this would be dictated by what is available in messing sets.

But then I wondered if we even need a bedding set....???

Firstly the baby sleeps in a crib in a room with you. Just a sheet on the mattress, a blanket and no pillow. So not much. After 6 months graduating to the cot.... At what point does the usual 'nursery bedding set' come into play? Ie the quilt and pillow?? And do bumpers have a purpose (besides adding to the SIDS debate) or do they just look pretty?

Maybe I should just start with the curtains??

Have a horrible feeling my nursery is going to end up being a bland neutral room.

Messing = bedding

You need a bedding set when they no longer want to sleep in a sleeping bag. Otherwise blankets and duvets are a PITA. For my DD that was 2.6 yo or older when she declared she was too old for it.

You need sheets and blankets for newborn. Once over 4kg, then you can move to sleeping bags (aka grobags). Grobags are colourful enough surely?

And there is zero needs for bumpers. The bars in the cot are designed to be safe for even newborns. They won't get their heads stuck. And they don't mind hitting it occasionally.

And 4kg is usually with a month for most babies btw. It is 8lb 8 oz (google says). Yours might even be that size at birth! So just get a cheap and cheerful blanket would do.

You can make the nursery nice and colourful without having lots of colourful bedding? We got some sticker things for the wall in a jungle theme and colourful hooks to hang things/few pictures etc. As far as nursery sets go, we just bought a couple of things from one of the M&P ranges (the lamp shade, cot mobile and a nappy carrier). Baby will be in our room to start in crib. So just bought sheets and swaddle blankets for first few weeks. Then gro bags for when he's a bit bigger. I've bought some cellular blankets too for if it's cold but haven't bought any bedding sets as such.

Actually I do have the gro swaddle with a nice starry pattern. But I can say it's definitely worth decorating against a swaddle blanket theme given how short a time baby is in them! My first is very small and my second is going to be small to. So they will be in swaddle blankets for longer than most before moving to grobags. Your baby is probably going to be bigger than mine and some friends say theirs can get into grobags within a week.

I mean I can't say it's worth the money to get a nice looking swaddle blanket. And you need at least two in case you get a large explosive poo or milk on it.

We bought the complete nursery set. Bumpers, quilt, sheet, mobile, curtain and nappie bag.. We paid well over $300 (I live in North America) and we have started only using the bumpers when DS turned 7 month. Quilt we I have at the moment in the travel cot to make it a little more comfortable. Nappie bag i have never used. Same with the curtain.

DS is now 11 month old and in a sleeping bag.

I'm pregnant with no2 and will not consider buying any nursery sets. Maybe a second hand mobile as this one is a girl and we have at the moments turtles as mobile. Would love to have the owl theme one..
Otherwise she will be in a swaddle me and blankets then eventually into a sleeping bag..

The sets look very nice but are a waste of money in my opinion.

Never needed bedding set

Newborn - Aden and anais muslin swaddles. Swaddle baby, once to big can just used as summer blanket in pram/ sun shade/ small mat to lay them on at friends house etc.

3 months -2 years - merino sleeping bag x2 ( one on one in wash)

2+ regular bed duvet and pillow

Ours have cot beds so same sheets on mattress at newborn they still use 4 years later as same bed but with sides off

Newborn to six months: sheets for the moses basket mattress and some swaddling sheets.

Six months to 18mo: sheets for the cotbed mattress and a cpuple of Gro Bags

18mo plus: sheets for the mattress, small flat toddler pillow and cotbed duvet from ikea.

Never needed a nursery set.

Newborn - cellular blakets.
Once they can wriggle out of blankets - sleepingbag/growbag.
Once you want to move on from sleeping bags (i think most people do at some point between 1-2.5yrs), then you get a toddler bed/cot bed duvet (they can have pillow from 1yr).

Bumpers arent necessary and add to the risk of sids and chance of escape. They just look pretty and most of the older generation think they are essential (because baby will get hurt but they will not).
