Basinet in my room for first 3 months or straight to cot?

Hey everyone,

I would like to BF and check on my baby for the first 3 months or so, and thought probably it would be easier to have a basinet in my room. But Im concerned that the transition from basinet to cot might cause problems if the baby wont settle in their cot/room? Im going to ask my MW at my next visit, but just wondered if you guys had any tips?

They're supposed to stay in your room and just generally with you at all times for 6 months for SIDS guidance.

I only lasted until the 12 week mark as DS was a noisy sleeper. Still is.

I would get a crib for your room as they're a bit more sturdy than a moses basket but still smaller than a cot or cot bed.

You can also just place the bassinet inside the cot to allow them to adjust if you go down that route.

Some pushchair carrycots allow for overnight sleeping

I think the advice at the moment is to keep the baby with you in your room for 6 months, if you can, to lower the risk of SIDS. Apparently hearing your breathing reminds the baby to breath! Whether you choose to do this in a moses basket, crib, cot or co-sleeper is up to you, but I think it's something you really have to do before worrying about moving to their next room/bed. No tips at all on how to manage that yet, I'm afraid, as I'm not there yet! But I guess it's do-able. Once the baby is bigger, the cot might not seem to daunting...

I had a lovely big co-sleeping bassinet attached to my bed until my son was about 6 months. I loved it and sold it for more money than I bought it for so ended up being a good investment.

sebsmummy1 · 15/08/2014 14:21

To add he transitioned to a cot with no problem at all. I don't think he even noticed, apart from the fact that the cot had a very expensive mattress in it which would have been much more comfy than the base of the bassinet. So if he noticed it would have been that he was now more comfortable.

Yes they advise 6 months but if you have room the cot can go in your room!

A friend of mine did it the other way and put a fold out bed in the nursery and she and her DH took turns.

Of course by "with you" they mean with mum, dad or other close/responsible adult to sleep.

ah great thanks guys! I'll invest in a crib (not sure what the difference is between that and a cot but I'll Google!) or a basinet.

You advise as always is invaluable :)

I had to use a towel in moses basket so wasn't too big for ds (still there 5 weeks in) am sure would have been worse in cot- we don't have room in our bedroom so no choice. Also think about what they will sleep in during day as we bring moses basket down? Could use pram or travel cot I suppose?

A crib is just a small cot, or at least mine is, the Hyde Crib from Mothercare. Nice and high so he is bed height. Then there are swinging ones. I have a big cot from John Lewis but don't plan to have him in his room for 6 months. Easier to not be in and out of different rooms anyway, in the early days.

DS1 slept in his cot from day one we came home and has been in it since he turned 10 month old. As I'm expecting baby #2 in 10 weeks the cot is still in our room and in the morning when DS wakes up early and I'm still tired I let him sleep in it. Otherwise he is now in his room in a toodler bed that my husband build.

During the day he slept in the pram (it has a bassinet and safely to sleep in) , in my arms (not that often as I noticed he got to attached being in my arms) or beside me on the sofa..

Take a look at the Arms Reach cosleeper. The single best purchase we made. We used it as a bassinet for 6 months and then a cot until 2 years. It is also a travel cot which we found incredibly useful.

OneLittleToddleTerror · 16/08/2014 05:14

I don't think a baby minds that their bed is big! dD was in a cot bed from day 1. It fits in our room so we didn't think there is a need to buy something smaller. That is the size of a toddler bed btw. They don't roll so just lay where you leave them. If they like it snug you can use a swaddle.

But we kept her in our room till over 6mo. No problem moving to her own room.

redcaryellowcar · 16/08/2014 05:36

we have ds2 in our room. he is 5m, ds1 was in our room until about 8 or 9m both from day one in a standard size cot (not cotbed) i was always worried about how wobbly Moses basket bases were, perhaps have a read on the lullaby trust website here about safe sleeping.
we had them sleep in the pram top when downstairs during the day.

ColdCottage · 16/08/2014 08:59

I just used a box at the bottom so babies head was up near the top by me, as he gets longer just used a smaller box at the bottom. Also useful for keeping a nappy change on top of the box. I used a large plastic bib - 10 for 3 pounds from asda I think, as mini change mat - no getting out if bed to change them! Grin

Crib = small cot (usually only suitable for first 6 months or so)
Cot much bigger and lasts from birth until much longer. Fine if you space to sleep in same room as cot for first 6 months.
I'd read on here that babies often outgrow a moses basket really quickly - but depends on size of baby.

If you end up having a c-section, lifting baby might be difficult - especially from a moses basket on the floor. Some cots can adjust to different heights though. Check before you buy.

I've just bought a snuzpod. It is a bit pricey, but I liked the idea of having baby at same height as bed and easily accessible, but not in same bed. We haven't really got room for a cot where I sleep. There are a few similar co-sleepers: the bed nest, the troll crib, the chicco next to me, arms reach and probably others. I haven't tested any of them, but liked this one best, but haven't put it into action yet. It also doubles up as a travel cot and the top part is quite portable so can be taken out of bedroom for baby to sleep in elsewhere in the day.

Laughing at "useless advice"!!

I'm planning on having a bassinet in our room for 8 - 12 weeks and then transferring to cot in baby's own room. I might try to put the baby in that room for naps during that time. SIDS advice is different here (NZ) and there's no mention of the 6 months in same room thing - although NZ SIDS rates have historically been terrible, I think we were #1 for ages & maybe still are. Suspect it has something to do with our very cold, damp, draughty houses.
