Rh negative - can I just check something ?

Hello

I am 13 weeks pg with no 2. I am group A neg. I had anti D with DD at 28/40 and 34/40 (my second pg but first live baby following a termination many years ago). However, DD is group O neg at birth so I didn't need Anti D after the birth.

Am I right to think 2 negative parents (in the Rh sense ) can't produce a positive baby? And that if DH and I are both negative, there is no point in having Anti D during this pg? As it's a blood product and presumably costs money to administer (as well as hours sitting round in the hospital clinic) I'd avoid it if not necessary.

Any thoughts? Many thanks for your help.

I am RH- neg and DH is Rh + yet both our babies are Rh- and so I have decline Anti-D and have never had it. I am now expecting number 3 and have declined it again.
Because you have had a termination it may be slightly different... not 100% sure....

yes, AFAIK.

although they may want you to have it anyway, I seem to remember someone saying (presumably to avoid mistakes - they won't have tested your dp themselves after all).

velcrobott, in theory there's a risk of producing the antibodies before the birth, if there's a bleed during pg.

As I understand it, so long as you have tested negative for antibodies then your termination won't make any difference this time. If both you and your dh are -, so should your baby be and there is no need for antiD.

it is true that if you are both negative then you will not have a positive baby. I am negative and mw asked about dh, unfortunatley he is posotive so I had anti d after dd2 and will be having it during this pregnancy

Many thanks. I'll stick to my guns and decline it when offered.

Personally, I think it's a good idea to have the Anti D just in case. Your DH could still be rhesus + even though you've had a rhesus - baby. If you were to have a + baby this time and develop antibodies, it would not affect this baby, only future ones, but it can affect you if you ever need a blood transfusion. As I understand it, if you've developed the antibodies it means that it will take longer for the haematologists to check your blood and find a correct match.

dollyp, I would only decline the anti-d if you knew for certain that your dh was RH negative too. If he is positive and you are negative you could have a lo that is either positive or negative - you would never know for sure without their blood being tested.

We dont get the anti-d as standard at 28/34 weeks here but I did get it after dd was born so she must have had positive blood (dd is A positive and I am B negative)
