Question about Breech presentation

A friend of mine is currently 31 weeks pregnant and the baby is lying in a breech presentation. She knows that there is still plenty of time for the baby to move into the correct head down position but...

If it stays breech does she have to have an EVC procedure to try to correct the baby's position or can she just say that she'd rather go ahead and have a c-section?

This is her first baby.

My baby is also breech I am only 29 weeks but last 2 scans baby has stayed breech my consultant just said if baby stays breech I will have a c-section evc was not mentioned, this is my second baby. First baby was breech from 28wks and never turned she was also a c-section but there were other compications with her also.HTH

I think (NICE?) currently recommend that all breech be offered ECV as it's a non-invasive procedure that can reduce the number of sections performed.
Personally, I was told I could go straight for c-section, but that I had nothing to lose by trying the ECV. ECV was uncomfortable and didn't work, but I felt I'd done everything I could, including being on all fours on the floor with my bum in the air... ECV is more likely to work if she's already had a baby - she's already stretched as there's more room to get the baby round.

They wouldn't do an ECV on me as they said I didn't have enough amniotic fluid and it wouldn't work. There are risks to having an ECV (they tell you to be prepared for an emergency section). But now, I'd give anything not to have had a section

This site has lots of stuff about breech babies, including how they do ECV. Lots of ways to encourage babies to turn, too (from Nome's bum in the air technique to all sorts of wierder things!).

If your friend really wants a section and is hoping this will get her one, tell her to tell the consultant she wants a homebirth. They'll have her on the surgical table quicker than blinking .
