Gone off 'normal' food

Hi,
I'm 9 weeks pregnant with my second child and I have completely gone off normal food, usually we eat a variety of things for our evening meal but over the last week or so even the thought of it turns my stomach... I just want junk food... All the time! Has anyone else had this? If so how long did it last? If it's a while, this pregnancy will be flipping pricey!
Thanks
M x

I was the same. Lasted til about 14 weeks. I had morning sickness from 9-14 and i was like it all that time. Once the morning sickness stopped I started fancying normal food again.
It'll pass, just make sure you eat something.

Marzie88 · 09/08/2014 23:58

Thanks, luckily I've had no sickness, just aversions. I have been eating a little of what we're cooking but after a few mouthfuls it makes me feel pretty nauseous.

Oooh I had this too, from about 8 weeks to 18, coupled with 24 hour nausea and heartburn. I've learnt through trial and error which foods I can eat that don't cause heartburn - 23 weeks now.
Pretty much all I ate for the first 3 months were chips, jacket potatoes and toast!
What changed for me was feeling the baby kicking - that someone spurred on my maternal instinct to eat and drink well so never looked back after week 18.

Somehow not someone

Hobby2014 · 10/08/2014 00:01

I hope you don't get the sickness and the nausea eases off soon for you .
I had trouble with meat, and all kinds of veg. I love veg. But just couldn't stomach any type during that time, except potato. All I ate was different versions of potato. So boring! But it did stop. Smile

RevoltingPeasant · 10/08/2014 12:03

Op am 14+6 and normally live off fish and contents of our organic veg box.

Yesterday was a typical day and I ate:
Toast for breakfast
4 crackers and some Jarlsberg for lunch
2 bowls of cereal and a piece of toast for dinner

Carb-o-rama Shock cannot stomach mess or veg or anything sweet. Roll with it, I say.

noor265 · 10/08/2014 12:49

So normal! I had this up to about 20 weeks. Frozen pizza and macdonalds. Literally all I could keep down! Even fruit, cereal and other plain foods were making me worse. Just pure fatty take out!

Redling · 10/08/2014 13:51

Very normal. Most people seem to agree that white starchy carbs are the only things that can be stomached, I was the same. Maybe a bit of cheese. Very very salty stuff and sharp things like real lemonade. Baby will still get nutrients, just eat what you can!

mrsnec · 10/08/2014 13:54

I'm 32 weeks and could still quite happily eat nothing else but cereal and egg mayonnaise sandwiches!

ELA88 · 10/08/2014 13:55

marzie I'm 7+6 and am also craving junk food too! I ate 20 McNuggets the other day during a moment of no nausea! I've been trying to eat lots of veg but just don't fancy it! Xx

eurochick · 10/08/2014 13:56

I referred to it as my beige diet. If it wasn't beige, I wasn't interested. It passed as I moved into the second tri.

MarchEliza · 10/08/2014 13:57

I'm now 12 weeks and am (more or less) over this. From about 6 weeks all I wanted was bread and cheese, pizza, toasted cheese sandwiches and even, one time, a Whopper (really disappointing by the way - never again!)

Now I am much better and almost back to normal but am obsessed with Crunch Nut Cornflakes. Everyone is different but I doubt you'll have this all through your pg. congrats! Smile

I was rootling around in the freezer the other day and found a half empty box of potato waffles. Just the sight of them made me feel a bit eeuw - memories! I'm 33 weeks, and up to about 12/13 weeks I just wanted to eat potato - jacket potato, said potato waffles, chips - and cheese and baked beans.

After that I still felt a bit sick, but moved on to really juicy fruits/sorbets/ice lollies/jelly. So, eventually I wanted to eat healthier things again.

MyPandaisasecretmonster · 10/08/2014 15:00

I'm 8 weeks and just the same with constant nausea & absolutely no appetite , I just end up picking at complete rubbish , I really hope it wares off soon

Bearsinmotion · 10/08/2014 15:09

Yep. Am mainly veggie, cook all our food from scratch. Now 11 weeks pg and God knows how much bacon I've eaten, had a McDonald's for the first time in years... Just fancy a Pepparami right now!

LBNM19 · 10/08/2014 16:07

I was like this till 16 weeks, had 4/5 good weeks of eating everything and back like it again I'm 29 weeks and have to really fancy what I have I hate it, the food shopping is a nightmare x

StaircaseAtTheUniversity · 10/08/2014 16:26

I was like this the whole pregnancy- I was sick the whole way through but considerably less sick if I only are what I wanted rather than trying to force myself to eat cereal and salad. Literally everything that wasn't bread or plasticky take away like McDonalds made me heave.

If it's any consolation I barely put on any extra weight that wasn't the baby though (was vomitting every bloody day mind you) and as soon as DD was out it went away and I was eating normally again. DD came out completely healthy and bonny too so my fillet O fish and full fat coke habit didn't harm her too much!

In the almost six weeks since she's been here my tastes have returned to normal and I'm living on fruit, vegetables and salad and craving them to boot. I couldn't have survived my pregnancy without McDonalds and white bread so don't fight it too hard or beat yourself up if the options are literally this or nothing; you need to eat something!

JennyBlueWren · 10/08/2014 16:36

I'm 11 weeks and gone off normal meals, especially vegetables and chocolate! Been eating a lot of cereal, fruit, salt and vinegar squares and sweets. Also found I was unwell in the evenings so cut out evening meal replacing it with a bigger lunch or early afternoon tea which made a difference although I wake up very hungry.

beccajoh · 10/08/2014 16:38

I spent most of my first pregnancy eating sweets, pineapple, mashed potato and roast beef flavour monster munch. Just go with it for now. You might find things improve in the second tri.

It's only really savoury stuff oddly, so I'm cramming the fruit in before my body rejects that too! Beige is a very good description for the savoury food I can tolerate. I had a Macdonalds for lunch today and it was the first full meal I've been able to eat in days, it was amazing! Thanks everyone, just glad it doesn't seem like it'll last forever! ??

I'm lucky to not have experienced really bad cravings. while I do crave i've managed to curb it. Mostly im just thinking about how i should feed the baby inside me nutritious food (nutritious food can be really tasty!) Gave birth a few months ago and the baby as healthy as can be so it was so worth it :) Maybe try substituting junk for healthier alternatives? Like if you crave pancakes try whole wheat ones with fruit instead of syrup.

Roonerspism · 13/08/2014 06:13

Oh yes....

Every pregnancy I have this, till at least 24 weeks.

My midwife's theory was the healthier you eat generally, the more carb crap you want (and vice versa). Just go with it as I think our bodies are good at saying what we need.

Tis bonkers though....
