flying when pregnant?

DH's parents want to go on a villa holiday to Frigliana . (Spain next year) and want us as well as DSIL & fiance to go too.

We are going to be TTC from Christmas, so not sure if we can go/when would be best to suggest.

I am a teacher so we will have to go in school holidays. I have read that it's ok to travel in 1st and 2nd trimesters if no complications. Obviously there is no guarentee that we will get a BFP straight away which makes timings even more complicated. This will be our first DC so was wondering if any of you lovely ladies had any advice on if/when to travel?

I flew at 31 weeks pregnant with no problems. If you know which airline you'll be flying with then have a look on their website - most have a cut off at 34/ 36 weeks and say you need a Dr's fit to fly letter after 28 weeks. If flying later you'll also need to ensure that your travel insurance includes not just potential problems with you but also health care for the baby once born.

Also whilst 1st trimester may seem like an easier time to travel many women get bad morning sickness - I was throwing up all day every day until 22 weeks and would never have been able to fly early on but of course everyone is different

Thanks Wish.

This is the problem isnt it. everyone is different and we say yes and do it for Easter hols for example, I would be 13 weeks if I got pregnant first time, or we may still be TTC... ARRRGGHHHH!!

Hi Shiny, I went on honeymoon at 9 weeks and found the flight itself ok. The main problem I had was queuing up for check in as I got quite hot and dizzy. On the holiday (which was a city break) I found that I had a couple of good days where I had lots of energy and we walked around loads to see all the sights and then a couple of bad days where I felt sick and didn't feel up to doing much of anything. The good thing for me was that I was obviously with DH who understood why I was struggling on those days, if you are going with family and may still be in the early stages of pregnancy then you may want to consider whether you will be telling them early on or not. If they don't know and you are trying to put a brave face on whilst feeling rubbish it could make things worse. All in all though I think you should be fine to book for Easter, if you get your bfp straight away you will be well into the second trimester and probably feeling much better Smile

I survived flying to New Zealand when 14 weeks pregnant.
It wasn't a planned trip (my dad got taken into hospital while on holiday). How it goes and how you feel will depend on you and your pregnancy. I am considered a high risk pregnancy as I am obese. I discussed it with my consultant who prescribed me some anti-clotting meds as I was at risk of DVT due to size and distance. I was fine and baby is now nearly 34 weeks.

That being said, whatever you do make sure you have proper travel insurance and that you declare pregnancy and that it is covered by your policy.

You would be fine but do be prepared to feel rough if you are in the first trimester xx

I'd also say don't plan you life around a baby that isn't even conceived yet! It could be quick, could be slow, and you just adjust to the situation as it happens. Either way you will be in early pregnancy, and the worse case scenario is that you can't or decide you don't want to go.

Buy some good insurance, and don't let TTC rule your life!

If you have not booked something, and also aren't pregnant by then, it just makes not being pregnant that much harder. It normally takes up to a year to get pregnant, although many people do fall quite quickly. Consider this early training in not being fully in control of your own life/body/emotions. :)

I agree with time. If you put off making plans because of ttc and then don't get pregnant quickly it'll be a very long year for you. A villa holiday can be as active or not as you like so if you do get pregnant quickly and are in early pregnancy then you can enjoy a relaxing week by the pool, if not pregnant then at least you have a holiday to look forward to!

Thanks for your replies and advice!

You`ve pretty much said what I expected. I am assuming that DH has told PIL's that we are planning to try in the new year(they are very close and until I told him fairly recently didn't realise people tend to not tell until 12 weeks).

I think I will suggest Easter, pushing it out to summer if we do fall straight away might be too late, and May half term Ill be doing revision classes ready for exams. If they dont want to / can't go then, they can go without us.

I suppose you are correct, the good thing about a Villa holiday, is I can do as much/little as I feel comfortable doing.
