Fluid retention

I have spoken to a midwife tonight in tears as I am really struggling with fluid retention. I have been reassured that there is nothing to worry about so I suppose this is just a moan.

I am very lucky as my BP is fine and no protein or sugar in my urine throughout the pregnancy so it is not a symptom of anything that can harm me or baby just a massive discomfort. I am being kept awake by numbness and pain in my arms and hands and this evening my leg and feet were so swollen it frightened me.

Anyone else suffering or suffered with this and wants to share or has any advice?

Keeping legs raised a bit can help. Have you got a partner that can give you a bit of a leg and arm massage too to help get the fluid moving? Gentle exercise can also help as it gets everything moving so a gentle walk if your not too uncomfortable. How many weeks are you?

My hands have been agony. Finally ordered some wrist splints from amazon and can now sleep at night! They look ridiculous but I don't care.

For feet - cold water soak before bed (bucket works well) and then I sleep with them raised by two pillows which I have stuffed under my fitted sheet so they don't move.

These are the splints I got - they have really saved my sleep : )

Thank you happy. I tried resting and elevating but didn't find myself any less swollen or more comfortable so have been quite active for the last week. It hurts my feet especially but no more than not walking and my self esteem is better for having got some things done. Tried massage but it is so tender and painful I just end up getting upset. I'm 35 weeks so potentially not too long to go =)

mssleepy sorry you're suffering too. Those are the splints my dad has for his arthritis. How do they "work" to relieve discomfort? Thank you for your advice. Have tried cold water which soothes a little but my feet still swell more because of sitting and having them at ground level. I do use pillows at night.

I don't know how they work, bug, but I read beforehand that they do and they say they help with carpal tunnel on the website too. I think it's something to do with keeping your wrists straight to keep the blood flowing, perhaps? They had a metal strip in them that means you basically can't move your hands or bend your wrists in your sleep. Sounds uncomfortable but you get used to it. Before I was wearing them the pains in my hands and arms were waking me at least twice a night, but now I still have some tingling and numbness when I wake up but no pain.

Thank you. Will definitely investigate some.
