You only really NEED:

  • something for the baby to sleep in (cot, moses basket etc) + bedding
  • a buggy/pram
  • a carseat if you drive
  • a few babgrows and vests
  • nappies and something to clean your baby's bum (cotton wool or wipes) + nappy cream/sudocreme etc
  • bottles/formula if you arent breastfeeding

All the rest you can get as you go along, really. Dont get conned by all the baby 'must haves'.

There's a great book I got from the library called something like 'What you don't need to buy for your baby' . To be honest it's best not to get carried away there's so much hard marketing from the big shops and brands . You've mentioned all the essentials so don't worry at this stage and enjoy!

There are a lot of nice to haves but Deluge is right there are a lot of nice things that you will be told are essential but aren't ... expensive changing table comes to mind

I would add to Deluge's list a folding changing mat that you can take wherever you go... you can put it on any flat surface to change baby

and maybe a baby bath...I am not sure if this is essential I thought it was but maybe more experienced wiser mums will come along and say its not

Muslins were a must have for me. In the early days I always had one draped over my shoulder.

Dont get sucked in to buying all the toiletries for them. They only need to be bathed with water.

nappies and wipes or cotton wool
something to transport them sling and or a pram of some sort
car seat
bed and somewhere to put them to sleep in day so cot plus rocker or carrycot for pram or a moses basket you can move around the house
muslins, simple clothes eg vests and sleepsuits.
bedding including something to swaddle with (you dont need cot bumpers or quilts just sheets, some blankets and maybe sleeping bags.
bottles and sterilising stuff or bfeeding stuff like nursing bras and boob pads.
plenty of chocolate and comfy trousers for you!

Lots of changes of clothes for you. Especially if you're having a boy! No one told me about that one - comfy clothes are good, but my DS was fantastic at managing to pee on my T-shirt, trousers AND socks at least once a day. Then there were the odd nappy accidents, the burping up bits of milk onto your clothes etc. Where a pair of trousers used to last 3 days, they now only last one if I'm lucky.

Frozen home made meals with cooking instructions!!!!

Get the essentials and then wait until your DC is here to see what else they / you need. eg. your dc might love swaddling - mine hated it with a passion, Your DC might love grow bags - mine hated them too. Mine loved a sling yours night hate / you might.

I did all my baby buying on Thursday. For the actual baby I bought:

12 x short sleeved vests in newborn size
12 x sleep suits in newborn size
2 hats
2 pairs of socks
5 packs of size 1 Pampers nappies
A changing mat
Some cotton wool and some water wipes
10 x muslins (5 small, 5 big)
2 x swaddling blankets
2 x cot/pram blankets
1 x Sleepyhead mattress/bed thing
A thermometer for the bedroom

I've borrowed a moses basket that the Sleepyhead fits into
I've borrowed a car seat
I've borrowed a bassinet/carrycot thingy
I'm going to use normal pillow cases as 'sheets' for those things

I bought a buggy off ebay that the borrowed car seat and bassinet will fit into.

Things I still need to buy - a cot for the side of my bed, since I don't want to co-sleep, but do want something the same level as my bed without bars in between - going to buy an Ikea Gulliver cot from ebay (currently around a tenner), take a side off and cable tie it to our bed.

We've also bought a carrier - new - the only new thing we've bought.

The rest of the stuff I bought was for me really. Various body fluid pads, bras, lansinoh cream etc. Oh, also a breast pump, one bottle and some milk collection bags. The real basics for breast feeding.

The only main issue is whether or not I'll have a tiny baby (which is what they think it might be, currently just below average allegedly, but who knows) - in which case I've written a list of stuff from Mothercare for boyfriend to run out and buy.

Re the what if it's tiny question. When we went to the scan we went to the RVS cafe/shop in the maternity department and they had baby clothes there in different sizes which would get you through to start with if you needed to.
