Horrible piles at 36 weeks

Sorry - not the most pleasant topic!

I've often had piles over the last 10 years, on and off, but never this bad - this one has appeared suddenly over the last week and is very big. Already using all the obvious OTC stuff and ice etc

My question is: is there any point in going to GP at this point? Will they be able to prescribe anything or do anything useful? Or will midwife/consultant, both of whom I'm seeing tomorrow for standard appointments.

Having a c section so not worried about pushing, but could do without having these for another 4 weeks!

Thanks

There is a prescription thing they can give you, 'dries them up'. You might as well ask! :)

I've just encountered this at 38 weeks, got some Germaloid cream which is anaesthetic and also shrinks the pile. Preparation H and Anusol do the same thing. It'll probably come back in a couple of weeks when I've been pushing but like you is rather not make these final weeks more uncomfortable than they already have to be! I feel much better today after applying it for 2 days.

Also you can buy these creams over the counter, no need for GP. Midwife said they are fine in pregnancy (though of course the box will say consult a doctor if pregnant).

Thanks, am using germaloid cream which helps a bit but doesn't seem to be having any noticeable effect in terms of getting rid of them!

That's a shame! It's stopped mine hurting but I haven't really investigated to see what's going on yet. Doesn't help I can barely reach the 'afflicted area' anyway!

Do you have any laxatives as well, like lactulose or something? Making it soft as possible- even if you're not constipated- reduces the pain.

Can get steroid versions of the over the counter creams. Go to your GP.
