High Blood Pressure/Glucose & Protein - Advice needed!!!

Just had my 38 week check up and have been told that I am a borderline case with my blood pressure and that I have glucose and protein in my urine. I have to go back tomorrow morning for another check up, but if no progress I will be admitted into hospital.

Will they just keep monitoring me everyday in the hospital until my due date (12th April 2004). Or do they normally induce? Getting rather anxious to say the least, any advice would be great. I am trying to rest as much as possible.

Thanks Tasha

tasha I had the high bp bit and they kept me in and then induced. I would have thought that they will induce you soon with those symptoms. What is your bp?>

poor you

It was 130 over 90. Anything over 90 they would want to admit me. How long did they leave you before being induced? Did they wait for your due date if it was close to when you were admitted? Lastly, is it really awful being induced?

I suffered from high BP (lower number up to 115), glucose, and traces of protein. I was lucky not to have to be admitted early. In the end they let me get to 41 weeks before inducing me.

Thanks coppertop for your experience. The thought of having to go in tomorrow and just be bed ridden just doesn't appeal to me one bit.

Forgot to add that induction wasn't too bad. My first labour was very long but I had an epidural so it didn't hurt too much. I was induced the 2nd time because ds1 had been a big baby (9lb 8oz) and the doctors were sure that ds2 was big too. At 38 weeks he weighed 9lb. Again, the second time was fine and the labour was much shorter.

Hi Tash - sorry you're going through this. I know it's freaky but try not to worry too much - at least it is being monitored. I had high bp and protein towards end of my pg wth ds and was monitored at hospital every day for two weeks until he was induced a couple of days before due date - in the end they induced because my bloods started to go funny (platelets etc) so they'll probably start checking those for you too. With dd I had glucose which turned out to be gestational diabetes around 32 weeks - that was controlled with insulin until 38 weeks when I had an 'elective' section (blood pressure up again and funny bloods) - I don't know whether you've had the full glucose tolerance test or if, because of the protein etc they'll just want to go ahead and induce. Just be sure that you feel fully informed about the situation and ask loads of questions - I used to write a list before every check because I'd get really intimidated by doctors. not ask anything then go home plagued with questions. With things like this the situation can change on a day to day basis so it will probably be a roller-coaster ride from here on in but what ever the outcome you'll cope. You are so close to the end - just hang in there

Tashatait - you will only be induced if after monitoring you that it looks like your blood pressure is not being controlled. As well as measuring your blood pressue, blood will be taken to check various levels. The main things they are looking at is your urate level and your platelets. If the urates start rising and the platelets start falling, the baby is best to be delivered incase you develop severe pre-eclampsia.
Try not to worry too much - it is quite common for blood pressure to start rising near the end of pregnancy. You might find you are only in for a couple of days and home again.
