New Born Clothes

Hi

I know everyone always says, don't buy too much newborn stuff because everyone receives plenty of gifts for the baby.

However, I would like to have the basics sorted. So my question for all the experienced mummies....where, what and how many did you buy of new born clothing? What are the essentials for the 1st few weeks? Which brands do your rate for quality?

Thanks

Just get short sleeved vests (bodysuits with poppers under the crotch) and a babygrows (all in one with long sleeves and long legs) to start with. Say 6 of each, fewer babygrows if you are having a summer baby. If a summer baby, add a few T shirts.

A couple of cardies and a few socks.

Wooly hat or sun hat depending on due date!

Then see how you go for presents, how sicky your baby is and how you get on with the laundry.

Next, Jojomamanbebe and John Lewis are good quality, but at a price. Your baby won't be in newborn clothes for much more than 4-6 weeks, so go cheap now. Tesco, Asda etc all fine and much cheaper.

Also muslins, you can never have too many muslins.

Some bodysuits/vests and sleepsuits (with feet and built-in scratch mitts). Muslins. That's it really. I find H&M best for sleepsuits as they have elastic around the ankles so baby's feet stay in the feet area. Otherwise baby's feet can end up in the knees of the suits as the legs are baggy. Also H&M's sizes are the most sensible - they go up in two month steps instead of three so 0-1 fits way better than 'newborn' or 'first size'.

Oh yes, H&m fab, forgot about them. Cute prints too.

I'm not buying newborn as my last baby was 9lb so I doubt newborn will fit. I have bought basics in 0-1month which is up to 10lb, so hoping I don't have a whopper!

Due Sept and I've bought:
7x short sleeved vests
5x long sleeved vests
6x sleepsuits
2x cardigans
1x cotton dunagree outfit
2x cotton bottoms
socks, bibs, hats in 0-3months size.

I know I will need more than this (especially sleepsuits) but I'm waiting to see how big baby is and what we get gifted.

My little one was born 12th July and because its been so warm he's not had the opportunity to wear many of the lovely outfits he has been bought.

Stock up on vests with various sleeve lengths if your baby is due in the summer. You can never have too many vests!

Dc1 born beginning of summer and it was so hot she didn't wear a stitch! Good job really as she was so sicky.
Dc2 due beginning of autumn so looking forward to dressing a baby this time!
I have bought quite a few baby grows as expecting this to be a sicky one too. Muslins currently hanging out to dry! Love seeing baby washing on the line.
