New baby, new mattress

I have a quick question for the panel! Pregnant with DC3 so you'd think I might know the answer to this, but hey!

I know they say new baby, new mattress, and I understand there is a higher risk of cot death if you use a used mattress from another home. DS2 had a new mattress anyway as he had his own cot bed (DS1 was still in a cot bed when DS2 arrived). I did buy a new Moses basket mattress for DS2 as well, but is this really necessary??? It is just a wipe clean piece of foam really, am I taking a risk by using DS2's?

I would buy a new mattress for every baby personally.

ICanHearYou · 24/07/2014 14:08

My mattress did 2 of my babies, 2 of someone else's and is just doing one more.

This mattress drama is just about making people spend more money.

I wasn't going to bother but then I took the cover off to wash it and the mattress was disgusting so I've invested in a new one. 50% off at Kiddicare at the minute Smile

The research shows it makes a difference but they still have no idea why- given the weight of evidence, I'd get a new one. I always work on the basis of taking best advice on things like that as, if something were to happen, I'd always wonder if I could have stopped it.

I don't think this is a risk created by the market to sell more products. I think there's actual evidence that a new mattress for each baby is one of the factors that has reduced the rate of SIDS.

Not worth the risk for me. If the worst happened I'd always wonder if it was the mattress, and you'd never know.

Oh, I wasn't planning on buying a new cot mattress for this baby as (9 years ago) when I was buying my mattress for ds the lady in mothercare told me the one I was buying would do other babies (cannot quite remember why) but something to do with how it's made.

Now I'm wondering will it still be ok? Any advice please?

Thanks for all replies. I typed my original message in a hurry and didn't check it, so have just realised that I wasn't very clear in my question. Apologies!!

What I meant to say was, I will definitely be getting a new cot bed mattress anyway but do I need a new Moses basket mattress? They are in the Moses basket for such a short time that I would say both mattresses we have already are in good condition, don't seem worn in any way, no tears or damage, and can easily be wiped clean as they have that sort of plastic coating all over.

The info from the lullaby trust seems to suggest that using one of these existing Moses basket mattresses would be fine, but having said that for the sake of a tenner should I just get a new one?! Can't believe I am agonising so much over this! Grin

It had never occurred to me that I'd need a new mattress for dd2. Having read the lullaby trust stuff though it seems that as long as it still looks in good condition it'll be fine. Both the cot & Moses basket mattress were bought new for dd1.

thatwhichwecallarose · 24/07/2014 19:58

So I don't think you need a new one for moses basket. Not according to the lullaby trust info anyway.

Thanks for posting that fact sheet Anything, I found it really helpful.

Rockchick1984 · 25/07/2014 12:08

under £6 it's not worth the risk for the price IMO!

insanelycheerful · 25/07/2014 13:50

Thanks rockchick, what an absolute bargain!!

Hmmm, I read the lullaby trust document and it actually says you can use the same mattress as long as it is still in a good condition.
