I loved 'What to expect when you're expecting'.

I had no clue at all about pregnancy.

ThatBloodyWoman · 23/07/2014 14:00

They also do 'What to expect in the first year' which I also found very good.

I had no clue at all about babies either.

amy83firsttimer · 23/07/2014 14:11

I've been given the baby book by sears and sears. It's the right balance of progressive (lefty) and medical. It's by a paediatrician and his wife. They have a large family of their own including a boy with Down's and am adopted child so it seems to cover most bases.

natharley11 · 23/07/2014 14:11

I have the mumsnet ones on pregnancy and the first yr. Fab especially liked the comments from real mums.

Was also given mylene klass book really good not soo much on advice but made me feel wasn't only crazy one x

buddhabee · 23/07/2014 14:38

yeh its hard and everyone intends to have different 'parenting styles' so which ones to go for - looking for a bog standard give me the facts kinda book and then will look into the other things i think later down the line!!

i do find it incredible how much you think but don't know!!

I bought one early on, but by about 4 months when I was talking about it more, I found that if you can, talking to friends/colleagues who are mothers was much more useful. Also, here is really good for information - the pregnancy diary for example. Once you're 'out' with your friends, they are suddenly very open with info for you.. holds barred!

I just had to look up to see which book I bought - Your New Pregnancy Bible - not looked at it in months.

ohthegoats · 23/07/2014 14:46

Oh, now I'm looking properly - Pregnancy for Modern Girls (might be kindle only, not sure) was an entertaining read.

Dazedconfused · 23/07/2014 14:53

i have my what to do for the first year book (still no idea but sure it will help when time comes) I'm now reading French children don't throw food it is good actually just seems to suggest back to basics as all the things in it my mum just says yeah that's what we all did...

weeblueberry · 23/07/2014 15:04

I loved What to Expect. I bought too many books and that was the one I loved the most. I'm pregnant again and will probably skim through it again although I'm hoping to be a bit more relaxed about the whole thing this time!

twiglet2 · 23/07/2014 15:10

My sister sent me the Day by Day pregnancy book after I'd had my 12 weeks scan (which I think you can get pretty cheaply online) which is pretty big and hefty, but does cover a lot of useful information about what to expect at which stages, scans, labour etc. My husband has read bits of it too and its helped him to understand what's happening and when.

i see they do that what to expect and the the first year one in a double book on amazon - that may be good, not telling most people for a couple of weeks at least (and that is my sis and best friend who are the most recently upduffness lol) so going to go stir crazy if i don't have someone to talk to so thought a book would keep me amused plus then won't sound like an idiot in convs lol!!

As that is one thing i do notice any friends that have had babies are all 'i have no idea' the day before and then give them a week they know everything and 'did you not know that' lol!! think its the lack of sleep lol!!

The Mumsnet baby book is great

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 23/07/2014 15:16

Another vote for the Sears' Baby Book...

squizita · 23/07/2014 15:48

"Your Pregnancy Week By Week" by Lesley Regan: very clear and reassuring, balances useful cautions without scaremongering, lots of useful reminders and has a birth guide in it too.
I have also used the week by week guides on:
-The NHS website
-Mumsnet
-Babycentre.co.uk (NOT the scaremongery and weird American site)
...which have similar info for free.

squizita · 23/07/2014 15:50

Oh and there is a book called 'first time parent' which again is very clear e.g. how to ... bathe, bed, feed, burp... etc'. No big 'theories' in there, just the nuts and bolts.

JustGotMyBabyOnBoardBadge · 23/07/2014 15:54

I read a few but kept going back to 'Expecting Better' as it really made me think alot more about the choices we make in pregnancy...I wouldn't suggest it as the only book you should read but if you are nervous at all about the pregnancy it puts some of the advice into perspective and encourages you to make choices that are right for you.

britnay · 23/07/2014 18:57

I really enjoyed "Your Pregnancy Bible"
It is a very big and rather thorough book. It has week by week info on pregnancy from both mother and foetus point of view, including lots of photos.

FairyPenguin · 23/07/2014 19:04

I second Pregnancy Week By Week by Lesley Regan, and What To Expect When You're Expecting. Those and the Babycentre.co.uk weekly emails were comprehensive!

Septbaby · 23/07/2014 23:30

One for the dads/partners: we bought for my husb that he loves is 'Commando Dad', it's written with humour and also there are lots of links in the books to videos and further info/reading on the related website... He thinks it's fab :)

I recently bought 'Your Pregnancy Bible' that's been previously mentioned and whilst it seems v good (I have given it a few cursory glances when I think about it) I have gained more info from online and talking to friends and family and attending a birth support group which has really opened my eyes up to lots of different topics and learning (especially as a 1st timer also) :)

BikeRunSki · 23/07/2014 23:36

I hated the "What to Expect..."series.
Loved the a Rough Guide. Also had a more medical one by Miriam Stoppard.

buddhabee · 24/07/2014 15:37

thanks everyone - will have a look into all of these - got my rough guide through yesterday so will have a good go at that at the weekend in the sun - covering it in wrapping paper so can read it wherever i want lol!!

got my early scan tomorrow (6+3) so fingers crossed everything is fine and dandy - am pretty scared!!

Got a stack from second-hand bookshop including what to expect and rough guide and also bought the mumsnet one off Amazon. Rough guide is a good laugh, WTE good for pictures of how baby is developing and MN great for practical tips On everything. TBH though my favourite so far is Marie mongan's hypnobirthing. It's the one that's made me feel the most relaxed and positive, plus it comes w a lovely meditation CD. My top pick. Smile

Burmama · 24/07/2014 15:48

Ps. Good luck w scan!!! SmileSmile
