Think my perineum is bleeding (TMI). Scared...

Sorry for TMI but I've just tried to go to the loo and found I'm constipated so let's say, it was difficult. When I wiped, there was a lot of bright red blood. I'm pretty certain my perineum is torn or swollen. I'm 35 weeks and scared. Is this normal? What do I do?

Where is the blood coming from, back or front? Can you feel a tear or any stinging?

If it's coming from the back maybe it's piles...

VJONES1985 · 17/07/2014 21:10

It's in the middle of the perineum and I think I can feel a tear.

i would put my money on piles.

no need to worry. get the dr to prescribe something safe and try to loosen the bowls. i used to find a big bowl of all bran did the trick

if it is still bleeding or you are worried speak to your midwife

I very much doubt you have torn your perineum - you birthed a poo not a baby! Get a mirror and have a look so you have a better idea of what is going on.

VJONES1985 · 17/07/2014 21:14

Wow, I thought if I ever had piles I would know about it but, until now, I've had no discomfort at all. My bowels were loose last week and I eat bran most mornings so am quite surprised.

Anyway, it's stopped bleeding now but will mention it to a doctor or midwife for sure. I stuck my finger up my bits to make sure my vagina isn't bleeding but it seems to be the perineum.

So if it's not torn, why would it be bleeding?

Try having a look with a mirror. Often blood looks a lot worse on tissue than the actual wound.

I have some massive piles on my perineum, nothing is shifting them, so very scared of what might happen in labour!!

If it's not piles and it's a graze at 35wks you should have plenty of time for it to heal before labour. Just keep it clean.

BuildYourOwnSnowman · 17/07/2014 21:16

i would see dr/midwife sooner rather than later. if it is piles it is good to minimise them as much as possible before birth

VJONES1985 · 17/07/2014 21:19

Waggamamma - am just gonna have a look with a mirror. What do piles look like though??

If you found it difficult to go and were straining then you could have burst a small blood vessel internally. piles
What are you scared of?

mummaduke · 17/07/2014 21:22

It'll bleed if a pile bursts, or could just be burst capillaries below because of all the added pressure? Don't worry!

Not sure if you can use anusol while pregnant but worth finding out. Speak to the midwife either way - for reassurance.

VJONES1985 · 17/07/2014 21:24

Natural - was scared that it was coming from my vagina because it can obviously be hard to tell sometimes.

Just looked with a mirror and got dh to confirm too (lucky him) and there's a cut on my perineum.

I had vulvic varicose veins and piles when pregnant. I bled a little sometimes on wiping. I would use Andrex wet wipes after and Vaseline to soften but do speak to your midwife or GP.

VJONES1985 · 17/07/2014 21:50

Thanks, I will speak to them even though I'm quite embarrassed! Am seeing midwife next Thursday so will discuss it then unless it's more urgent than that?

BuildYourOwnSnowman · 17/07/2014 21:54

don't be embarrassed! very common

if you can i would try and pop in although if it is just a small tear you may be ok to wait

VJONES1985 · 17/07/2014 22:15

It's a cut rather than a tear and is now stinging when I wee, as expected I guess!

GingerRodgers · 17/07/2014 22:42

How close is it to your bum? Could it be a fissure? They're little tears that sting like buggers but heal pretty fast. Get some prune juice!

lighteningmcmama · 17/07/2014 22:48

I would visit gp tomorrow if you can. If it hurts when you wee, lean your body forward to, err, direct the wee away from wound (this is useful postnatal too). And keep the area clean. Piles bleed v often though

naturalbaby · 18/07/2014 07:57

Ouch, you poor thing. Pregnancy does things to your body you never expect!

Robio · 02/01/2020 22:33

Full disclosure; I am neither pregnant, nor a mum, nor a woman! I'm a 38 year old man, but I'm here because the lady who made the original post described what I am experiencing today... My perineum (being a most definitely not pregnant male, I had never heard that term until it started bleeding lol) is not torn, yet it is very red and if I wipe it with a tissue, the tissue collects bright red blood. I've had piles in the past, and this is definitely not that...there doesn't seem to be any lumps or anything except a vague soreness and the blood. I realise this is an old thread, but thought I would add what I am experiencing now and what the doctor says (hopefully tomorrow) as it may help someone else in the future.
