Private Early Scan?

Hi all! I am looking for some advice regarding going for a private early scan. I am currently somewhere between 5+2 and 6 weeks (differing cycles make it impossible to know for sure - GP going with 6 but I am leaning closer towards 5+2). I have only known about the PG since this time last week and it has been the longest week of my life! I am swaying between twinges of excitement and sheer terror of getting my hopes up and something going wrong. Symptoms come and go, adding to the fear that something might go wrong and I find myself wanting to repeat POAS! I am considering booking an early scan for August, when I will be 9+2 according to GP, or 8+4 according to my calculation. I am aware that a healthy foetus at this point won't necessarily mean that things will remain that way, but the idea of waiting another 6+ weeks for the 12 week scan is agonising.

I wonder what your thoughts on this are? Maybe I will calm down in a few days as the news sinks in? Did those of you who had early scans feel that it helped your nerves before the 12 week scan or were you just as anxious, or more so?!

Thanks in advance, it's nice to be able to speak to "someone" Thanks xx

I felt exactly the same. I went for one at 9 weeks. It did reassure me. I went from being convinced I wasn't even pregnant to saying I probably was. If you can afford £100 to put your mind at rest I think it's well worth it.

23 weeks now btw.

I've had two 8 week scans. After one I went on to have a mmc and the other everything is ok so far. It did break the wait up a bit. But i only get reassurance for that day. For me I was still just as stressed in the run up to the 12 week scan. So whether it's worth the money I'm not sure, but I think it is if that helps?

I think an early scan is a really good idea. In my one successful pregnancy I had a scan at 9 weeks and found it very reassuring.

My only concern might be that I have no idea what happens if the scan is not a good one and they think the pregnancy is not progressing as it should. I assume they send you away with the advise to contact your GP/midwife but I have no idea how they deal with these situations.

Good luck xxx

Hi, i didn't have an early scan but i know what you mean about the constant worry...
The problem is, once you've had the early scan, you'll still be worried about the 12-week scan. Once you've had that, you'll worry about your 20 week scan, once you've had that, you'll worry about first movement, then you'll worry about movements feeling the same etc etc! I'm not saying this to put you off but pregnancy seems a continual worry (nevermind when LO arrives!) so if you're in the least bit short on cash, i'd say save it for something else. Just my opinion though. Hope it all goes well anyway x

I agree that whilst it's lovely at the time it only puts your mind at rest for a couple of days before you start worrying again! However if you have the spare cash it's lovely to see :) x

I had an early scan at 7.4 due to mc previously. It was reassuring to know there was a good heartbeat and all the related things to make it viable though I was still nervous waiting for my 12wk scan wondering if things would still be ok.
I am now the same waiting for my 20wk scan and looking forward to when I can feel movement and be reassured all is well. If you have the money and think it will help then go for it. Good luck

Had private early scans at 7 weeks with both of mine. Really put my mind at ease and was money well spent IMO.

I had an early scan at 9 weeks but then worried until my 12 week scan I would of had a missed miscarriage, im 19 weeks on saturday and worrying about my 20 week scan a week on wednesday!! I think pregnancy is worrying from the minute you POAS but try to relax and if you feel it would benefit you have the scan xxx

Thanks everyone for your input. It was a difficult choice but I have decided to go ahead and book the scan. It will be in 3 weeks, which will be 3 weeks (or more) before the 12 week scan. I know it might not be good news, or it might not be good news which will last, but I think it might just help give me something to focus on. Even if any reassurance I do get doesn't last, I won't have to wait too long before the next scan.

I'm hoping that as the next couple of weeks go by, I will become more used to how I am feeling. I never expected to feel this distracted but at the moment I feel like I can only think about one thing! xx

Hello, congratulations! I was exactly the same as you and I still am now, it's been such a worry and I had 2 early
Scans, one at 8 weeks, one at 10 weeks and then had my NHS scan at 12 weeks 5 days.

It was worth every penny I spent and did put my mind at rest seeing that heart beat! And also being able to take home pictures of your little bean is lovely to :)

I'm still worried now and have a long wait for my 20 week scan so have booked another private one for the end of this month. I would go for it! You will love seeing your baby and it will put your mind at rest a little bit. Good luck xxx

Good decision cherry I've had one at just over 7 weeks and have another on sat at 10 weeks n then my next one will be 13 weeks. After previously suffering a miscarriage it's lovely to know that every three weeks you get abit of reassurance and it's amazing when you see the heartbeat! X
