LOOKING FOR HELP FOR A FRIEND

I friend of mine has just found out that she's pregnant. She and her husband are very pleased. However she is terrified of giving birth, to the point where she becomes 'phobic' about it. She spoke to her GP but was brushed off and ignored.

Has anyone been in this situation and managed to get passed it? I'd would really be grateful of advice, I can't help for because I didn't have any 'unusual' panic about giving birth.

Hypnobirthing might help her
I'm going to try it for baby no2

What is hypnobirthing and how do you arrange for it? Do all hospitals make it available?

She might find that the midwife will be more sympathetic when she gets to see her (if she has mw led care?)

She has to be very specific about her fears though - and not play it down...because lets face it, we are all apprehensive. The mw needs to recognise that its a bit more than that.

It's hypnotherapy but focussed on birth
You can do a course or buy CDs. Courses aren't cheap but the CDs are reasonable

Thanks TheBlonde I'll let her know.

PannsPeopleQV, I have told her to talk to her health visitor. But you are right she'll very to be very careful when she describes how she feels. Thanks for your post.

A section????

MoreTeaAnyone · 12/09/2006 20:42

I said to her about asking for a section, but you know what it can be like. It's not the most popular delievery choice among MW etc.

Hiya,
A Doula would be of great use to her. Hynobirthing can help her, and how about some form of counselling to try to "find" out why she is so worried etc.
HTH

MoreTeaAnyone · 12/09/2006 20:46

A doula may be a good idea. Thanks.

definately talking about her fears and see which route would be the best to go....it's such an individual thing, but a vaginal Birth or Homebirth could be a healing experience but then so could a section be...!
Maybe, if they could afford it, an Independent m/w could be the solution!

ahhhh I was told about a thread on the August post natal group asking about hypnobirthing and now Ive found it.

Heres a little info and background, please excse the typos, grammer etc , but havent had much sleep due to dd2's feeding and I want to give you some initial info to pass on to yuor friend .

I had my 2nd baby 4weeks ago using hypnobirthing (an express version with only 2 one-one sessions with a practitioner and the cd) and now look on my 2nd brith as quite amazing and exciting. My practioner would like me to take my story national as its been quite life changing.

I unfortunately had post traumatic stress disorder with acute anxiety disorder and PND follwing my 1st brith and was determined to find a way of combatting terryfying and disabling fears and anxieties. Hospital visits to choose were to have 2nd baby alone got me in a terrible state.I couldnt even look at my pregnant stomach as I was so so terrified. Ive gone from phobia of medical anything (inc watching ER / CASUALTY etc), to more or less ok about it all and no acute reaction, will only a little but thats normal , my reaction was extremee before.

Ive been under the care of the mental health team and finally got my therapy sorted on the NHS , so last 2mths of pregnancy I was seeing a phychologist to treat the PTSD (only 3yrs late but hey!!). She suggested NCT classes to learn breathing , which after research I found they do not really do , but the NCT practioner locally suggested Hypnobrithing and gave me a number for a couple who used it. This led me onto the main Hypnobrithing website and I found someone local who teaches it. It is expensive and it takes a few weeks if you do the full course. I was lucky that Ive done hypnotherapy before so was able to harness the technique in a few short lessons. If totally new to it , I think a whole course is very very benficial and money well worth saving for and spending. I would also fndn someone who is trained for a new therapy EFT Emotional freedom technique , as this will help deal with fears and phobias very dramatically and QUICKLY . I recommend this as a must along side the Hypnotherapy, you wont believe the results.

It is very very new in this country and only a tiny percentage of women use this and more often with 2nd births. Its not all about being totally natural and no drugs , but being ok with whatever level of help YOU NEED and being ok with that.

Below are links to the websites

hypnobirthing.co.uk

emotional freedom technique Like acupuncture but with finger tapping. Very quick, amazing and easy therapy for relief of even deep seated long term fears and trauma. A simplfied version of what Paul Mckenna does on TV. Once learnt with practioner can do it on yuorself for continued relief.

I will come back to this thread and support and answer as many questions as I can.

A friend of mine wa slike theis -even talked about it before she got pg. She finally had a section, partly due to a hip problem but also partly due to her fear!

MoreTeaAnyone · 12/09/2006 21:57

Thanks melse and cece. I'll pass on the info. I will also tell her to look the thread up incase I forget anything.
