Had another growth scan and didn't understand any of it, nothing was explained to us, just that baby's 1.5kg, heartbeats fine so not in distress, we're below 10th centile and we've got to have another scan in 3weeks to see how the growths going. Been nothing but worry since the 20week scan, really struggling with it all x

DD was always small for dates, and was small when she was born. But that was due to my uterus being too small. She is now 14 and 5'4.5" which is slightly taller than the average adult woman in the UK.

Please don't panic about having extra scans. I had loads, but I knew they were being extra careful with me as I had a high risk pregnancy in the first place.

Even the 1st centile is completely normal : remember that centiles just mean that, in theory, of 100 babies, they would fall on that scale.

zoemaguire · 16/07/2014 17:35

Sort of, pottering - depends on the reason behind the low centile! DS should be tall, based on the rest of the family. The fact he is on 0.4th centile is due to his prematurity. So not normal at all.
But OP they are keeping a close eye on you, that is the main thing, and most likely pottering is right, it is nothing to worry about.

I just want to burst into tears, feel like I'm doing a rubbish job at growing her :( They wanted to do the growth scans to keep an eye on her, cos at the 20 week scan there was Echogenic bowel which they told us could be due to cystic fibrosis, me and OH were tested and it came back he's a carrier, so she could have it, or something else, we won't know if there's anything wrong until the birth but all this now is just throwing a load more worry at me. Was really hoping today's scan would go in our favour like the last one we had as the consultant was hoping to discharge us from his care, which ain't gonna happen now x

Hello, I've never really understood the centile things but I was measuring small for dates too. No one really seemed that worried, I got a couple of extra scans and everything was absolutely fine. I had to have midwife appt every week instead of every 4 or 2 closer to the time. At 32 weeks my bump/baby stopped growing all together. I didn't know why, I was eating healthy, no alcohol, no smoking. Doctors just put it down to "one of those things". Anyway, baby came just 3 days early at 4lbs8. Still no answers as to why so small. I hope this puts your mind at rest a bit. Try not to worry, if they have said healthy baby then that's the best thing they can say. You're doing a great job!

Thanks Booxo , will see what the next few weeks bring I suppose but just needed to let it out cos I feel like complete shiz right now, and like a failure to my baby xx

I'm in a similar position. The reason for mine has been discovered - the blood isn't flowing through the placenta and consequently umbilical cord as it should. As a result, they want to get the baby out early so I am waiting for a section as soon as a NICU cot is available at my hospital. The baby is estimated at 3 and a half pounds at 34 weeks, so really teeny tiny.

I've had a relatively easy and healthy pregnancy with a good diet, no alcohol (bar a couple of glasses of wine), no smoking, decent weight gain (not too much, not too little) and so on. Apparently placenta insufficiency is more common with IVF pregnancies (which this is), although they are not sure why and it is something that can happen to anyone. I'm told there is nothing I could have done. I still feel crap for not being able to grow a robust baby and am grieving for the final weeks of pregnancy that I will lose (after ttc for so long).

Our issue was flagged as a possible problem at the 20 week scan and followed up to see if it had resolved at 28 weeks. It hadn't, and since then I have been very closely monitored. It has been a very stressful time.
