Weight gain in first trimester.

I'm estimated to be in week 11 and my husband has just commented that he thinks I'm gaining weight all round (particularly behind). I was overweight already and he wasn't meaning to be mean but it doesn't help that he's often buying cakes and things and complains when I serve up healthy meals. I am trying to avoid the snacks and eat healthier but a bit down about it not doing much good.

How much weight gain is normal? What's the best way to avoid gaining too much?

"Women are recommended to have about 2,000 calories a day. You don't need any more than that until the last three months of your pregnancy, when you'll need an extra 200 calories a day."

This is useful, it's an American website so I'm not sure that it is exactly the same for us, but it's a good guide.

I'm in my 1st trimester and I seem to be losing and putting on weight.

How much you should gain during pregnancy really depends on your pre-pregnancy weight, and the midwife should then advice you.

Usually people say it's 1-5lbs during your first trimester 1-2 per week during your 2nd & 3rd. I think.

So roughyly 25lb to 30lbs altogether, I guess... correct me if I'm wrong though

For a BMI of 18.5 to 25 before pregnancy that weight gain is spot on according to this table. It also outlines weight gain if starting pregnancy with a lower or higher BMI:

Yes what all others say!

Pre pregnancy my BMI was 21.5- I was advised ideal weight gain for me is around 26lbs, I'm 12 weeks and have gained 6lbs Shock but I'm very tall as is OH, and I suspect we will have a very long baby.

Just making sure I eat three heathy meals and get at least 5 a day!! X

I used this as it gives you an individual range based on your starting BMI. TBH I didn't do much apart from keeping an eye on weight during pregnancy and going for walks. Put on a good bit of squish in the first trimester (morning sickness my eye- I had morning nausea cured by eating!) but it all evened out in the end.

Congratulations!

Thanks for those links.
I'm trying to eat smaller portions as I need to eat more often to stop nausea. Also trying to eat lots of fruit and veg instead of other snacks. Will try to fit in lots of exercise over this summer holiday and see if it does some good.

I found out I was PG about 3 week ago and I was 128lbs (bmi 21.9), and I'm now 129lbs but a week ago I was 131lbs. I'm vegetarian and I battle with low iron levels so it's constant battle to keep weight on.

I'm sure your MW would have said something if there was a problem. Congrats! :)

Heatherbell1978 · 14/07/2014 11:48

I started at 128 lbs with a BMI of 21.5 and have gained 31 lbs at 35.5 weeks now. I've been weighing myself each week and following the tracker above. Up until about 3 weeks ago I was perfectly in track and then put on 4 lbs in a week and now it's saying I'm a bit over! I'm not worried though, I'm all bump, otherwise still slim and not eating any more than usual. The week my bump popped (about 22 wks) I put on 6lb that week! Your body will do what it heeds to do. My weight gain seems to have slowed down now.
