Question about third trimester ultrasounds

Hi
I'm 32 weeks exactly with DC2. I have an ultrasound tomorrow as my DC1 was born at 32 weeks for PET, IUGR, malfunctioning placenta and not enough fluid. Obviously the pre eclampsia was diagnosed by midwife at normal appointment and was blue lighted to hospital, where a consultant did a scan and baby was here less than 12 hours later.

My question is: if tomorrow things arnt looking good for baby (paranoid based on DC1 pregnancy) can the ultrasound lady say it's time for the baby to be born or will she have to get a consultant etc there to confirm? I'm scared and nervous x

I imagine it would need a consultant. I've had late growth scans where I have then seen the consultant to discuss the results.

Thanks owl. Would that happen on the same day? Or would I have to wait till my consultants appointment on Tuesday (again based on DC1 pregnancy)? I'm guessing it depends if they find anything and if they do how serious it is x

Um.... I can't remember! The growth scans I had were unimportant really so may not be comparable anyway.

When I had a repeat 20 week scan once, the consultant was there doing the scan.

Not much help really :) if they are looking for specific things, I would have thought the consultant would be there or seen right after. Maybe they consider an appointment the next day is sufficient though.

Hope all goes well!

Thankyou! I know I probably seem like a hypochondriac but I'm so scared this time it's untrue x

I was told I would have to wait for a consultant if any issues with my placenta came up at my 28 week scan (nothing did thankfully). This was at a large teaching hospital so I wonder if they have a lot of ob/gyn on call?

MrsGiraffe12 · 13/07/2014 21:13

Thanks squitza you always talk sense :-) My hospital is one of the best in the south west aparently and has lots if teaching / students there from various universities so I'd imagine someone would be on call x

Things vary from hospital to hospital but usually, with your history, you would have a scan followed by an ANC appointment on the same day.

If this is not the case and the scan shows the baby is not growing well or the fluid is reduced (signs of PET) you would see an obstetrician there and then.

I have to have a growth scan at 32 weeks this time too.

Did you have to make a consultant appoitnment to follow it? I think that's how mine works. Should get off my bum and book that actually.

I hope everything goes well for you OP Xx

Thanks all. I'm just feeling anxious I guess but have calmed down a bit just by posting. I have a antenatal consultant appointment on Tuesday so I'm assuming this is the appointment to follow scan, got both through the post and nothing else was said about it x

Jumping on here as I have a scan Tuesday 34weeks but baby not grown for 3 weeks and have consultant appt that afternoon, I'm so sure that she will be here by Thursday which is bad timing as hubby starts his new job tomorrow!

MrsG, my scans at that point were done by a fetal medicine consultant and he/she made the delivery call.
