High anterior placenta & movements...

Hi,

I'll be a FTM and having not been through this before I'm a bit concerned and looking for some re-assurance from others who have been / are in the same position as me.

At my 20 week scan (where everything appeared "normal"), the sonographer said that I had a high anterior placenta which I understand means that I won't feel as much movement as if I didn't have this.

However, I'm now 22 weeks and whilst I do feel the occasional flutter, there's definitely no kicking going on yet (that I can feel) and I certainly can't detect any type of pattern to its movements - some days I may feel think I feel something and then other days it's very little.

Should I be concerned? When have others who had / have high anterior placentas started to feel regular movement? I'm beginning to get worried...

I have an anterior placenta although they havent said if it is high or not. I didnt get the flutterings that others have felt but by 20 weeks Id started getting what felt like muscle twitches - there was no good pattern until at least 26 weeks if I remember. Obviously if you are worried you should check with your midwife. Lots of my early movements were very low down - very low!

I had an anterior placenta. What your are experiencing up is very similar to what I went through with DD. I didn't actually start feeling big movements until I was about 29 weeks but even then they weren't like what others describe. The placenta is huge for a little baby to kick through. If you are concerned then speak to the MW.

However if it helps DD was born perfectly healthy...

Thanks polkadot & littlepea that does give me a bit of comfort that I'm not the only one who's not felt much yet. Glad to hear that your DD was fit and healthylittlepea

Think I may just check in with mw to be on safe side as would rather let her know and be told everything is fine than sit and stew about it.

I had anterior placenta with DS. I felt movements from about 22 weeks but only when I was lying on my side. So I wouldn't feel him all day at work then when I got home id lay down for half hour and he'd kick out at whichever side was facing up. I did feel a lot of hiccups though throughout the day.
My mw was fab and if I was at all unsure I could pop to see them and they'd quickly check heartbeat for me. I went probably every other week.
Been told I have an anterior placenta again with this pg but I guess movements will be different again as it all depends in where it and baby are.

Hello, I'm 21 weeks and found at from my scan last week that I have a high anterior placenta. I've been feeling movements for the last couple of weeks and have felt kicks. I haven't noticed much of a pattern though. The amount I feel seems to depend on how busy I am, as the baby is more active when I've eaten/am resting. I think when I'm busy I just don't notice what's going on in there. The last few days have been a bit quieter, but again not sure if this is because I've been busy running about and also because of the position of the little one. Having said that whenever I've reached the worried stage (like last night) I had a cold fizzy drink and lay on my left side, and the baby let me know she was there. If you're worried, your midwife is there to help with this kind of thing and I'm sure would rather you asked, than worried about it on your own.

Let us know how you get on Smile

I have anterior high placenta my movements have been all over the place I'm 34 weeks and just about got a routine, I have missed the movements this time as my first one was posterior

Thank you all so much for replying - it's really good to know that what I'm experiencing isn't out of the norm Smile

Twiglet what you're experiencing rings bells with me too, now I think about it when I was relaxing on holiday last week, I was more aware of the flutters. This week, I've been running around like a blue arsed fly and haven't really noticed much going on at all....

The combination of fizzy drink and lying on your side seems to be a common thread....I'm off to have a glass of lemonade will put my feet up Grin - and think I will also give the MW a call tomorrow.

Thanks everyone!

I have anterior placenta not sure of position though, I'm 25 weeks and would say been feeling definite kicks the last 2/3 weeks xx

I only learned that I had an anterior placenta from my notes. Went back to check a few weeks after my scan because I hadn't felt anything. Felt first external movement around 24 weeks and it was really low down. There was probably more than that before but I didn't really identify with the descriptions of "flutters" or "pops"... Think mine was somewhere between wind and a muscle jumping! Hubby was more frustrated than me because it was ages until he could feel anything, but we both took comfort from the scan being ok and hearing baby's heartbeat at the midwife appointments. The movements were so fleeting at the start that by the time he got over to me he'd missed them! Don't really remember when they became routine but it wasn't early on and I really know about it when he moves now!

Like you, I'm an FTM with a high anterior placenta. I'm 25 weeks today. I probably started feeling occasional flutters (to me, they felt more like bubbles popping) from about 20 weeks. Now at 25 weeks, the kicks are more obvious, but not all the time. I think it depends in which position the baby is lying: sometimes I can feel a definite kick and the surface of my belly will move; at other times she kicks my bowels (feels like wind moving) or my bladder (feels like I need to pee suddenly). I haven't even bothered to start monitoring the kicks regularly because I know it will only cause anxiety. I just enjoy it when it happens :)
