Hi
I wondered if anyone has experienced this, or knows anything about it. I'm 4 months pregnant and recently have lost a few small patches of hair. I've seen my gp, and I have no underlying health conditions. My gp said it can happen in pregnancy but couldn't say how it would progress/when or if it might improve.

I'm really worried and upset. Does anyone have any advice or experience?

Thank you x

History dictates that it is the other way around for me. My (naturally fine) hair thickens when pregnant but then straight after giving birth I start losing hair in massive amounts.

I guess it is all to do with hormones. Maybe once you've had the baby you will have lovely think, luscious hair.

Not in pregnancy but I had the same thing happen a few years ago. They ran all sorts of tests for thyroid and deficiencies but found nothing and then put it down to stress. It grew back eventually but if you have long hair then you might have to cut it to match the length when it's grown in a bit.

Whenskiesareblue - YES!! Although I can't tell you anything useful.

When I was PG with DS my hair fell out for the entire second trimester. It was universal so whilst I had no patches it was noticeably thinner - to me. It was about 3" below my collar bone at the time so I cut it to collar bone length which helped. It was incredibly depressing every time I brushed, washed or moved that strands and strands came out. I had blood test done and even a homeopathic referral (on the NHS nonetheless) but nothing conclusive. I kept hoping someone would tell me it was usual but my hairdresser and the various MWs all looked a bit Shock.

It really bothered me but it did slow in the third trimester and I didn't have the massive postnatal shed I heard about.

3 and a bit years on I have lovely, thick long hair....and am 15 weeks PG with #2. About 10-14 days ago it started to fall out significantly again. I am far less bothered this time (and am almost taking it as a sign of a 'healthy' PG!) as I know it slows/stops eventually.

So...as I said. Not much help if only to say I didn't end up bald Grin

Thank you so much for the replies.
Vallinnapod I can't tell you how reassuring it is to not be alone in failing to achieve the lovely thick hair I was promised. The worst bit is not knowing how severe it will get. It's not doing much for my self-esteem! My mw was a but puzzled too, but gp had seen it before apparently... I too had a blood test for thyroid etc but all fine. Might push for a referral.

Jennybluewren I'm glad to know yours did all come back. We're you able to conceal it fairly well?

Thanks again lovely MN people x

when I remember posting here in my first PG and being so disappointed no one else said "Yes, me!!" so I am glad to be of at least company, if not help!

My biggest concern was not knowing how bad it was going to get too, I was also assured by all those around me that it really wasn't noticeable.

Thanks Vallinnapod - it's definitely good to have company! We can both look forward to lovely, thick hair once these babies are born Thanks

Hi I don't have experience of this myself but when I was pregnant with my son a good friend of mine was pregnant to and her hair was falling out alot, I remember saying she had clumps in the bath.

Mine also goes the other way X

whenskiesareblue · 14/07/2014 09:57

Thanks LBNM19. It seems unusual but not unheard of then... X

I lost hair at first but then gained a lot! Grin

when I had three bald patches about 5 cm diameter for the largest. I managed to cover them up by pinning my long hair although I did try wearing hats too some days. It was harder to cover when it started growing back again as it would stick out. I used super strong mouse then to flatten it down. When it grew long enough I had all my hair cut and styled so the shorter bits fitted in. It actually looked quite good!

My colleague had this happen at the front of her hair line (it looked like she was going bald!) but two year on it all grew back and no long term issues. She was told it was something to do with hormones xxx
