crayfish poisoning harmful to baby?

I had (well heated) crayfish with my salmon last night and within 2 hours started vomiting violently. It went on for about 8 hours, eventually had blood in it which I assume is damaged stomach lining. I've never eaten shellfish in previous 2 pregnancies and now advice is that it's fine if heated up properly, obviously not in my case, but very worried for baby now. What is the bacteria in seafood, something online says it can contain listeria but that has a long incubation so I doubt it's that. Does anyone know if it's harmful or just unpleasant? Feeling very sorry for myself as dp working away for the weekend, and now stuck in with bored kids feeling grim and worried.

How many weeks are you? If you are past the first trimester, that is safer.

It is unlikely to have done any damage.

22 weeks, so well past early bit, just worried that some things can cross over placenta and unsure what the bacteria is with shell fish. I know cheese/listeria, meat/toxo etc. Have never been that ill before from food. Have completely disinfected bathroom in case kids get it but I'm not sure if food poisoning goes from person to person?

carrotcake if you are worried you can always visit the doctor, sometimes if you give a sample of saliva/urine they can test what exactly made you ill (listeria, E coli etc.) but i think you still have to have the bug in your system. Could give you peace of mind to hear all is well from the docs.

Out of interest did you have any rice iwth your dinner last night? Fast onset food poisoning is usually toxin related

fistfullofnappies · 10/09/2006 18:09

I had some bad mussels while pregnant with ds2, vomiting as you describe, it didnt do him any harm. I think I checked with the dr at the time, and it wasnt judged a health risk.

2hrs does indeed sound like toxin rather than bacteria - the quick vomiting normally clears it out your system PDQ. If you haven't vomited since that first bout I'd think you'd be ok, but if any other symptoms (nausea, vom, diarrhoea), save a poo sample and get to the GP.

FWIW I've had this kind of violent reaction to bivalves (scallops, mussels, oysters), even when my dining companions have been fine, for the last few years, but have been ok with crayfish, prawns etc. I'd be tempted to avoid them in pregnancy from now on if I were you - not because anything will cross the placenta but because 8hrs of vomiting is the last thing you need.

Thanks everyone. It wasn't rice with it but salmon and potatoes, thought I'd heated the crayfish through properly, maybe not. I haven't been sick since or had any diarrhoea so fingers crossed it's all gone. I didn't know about the toxin/bacteria thing, it was certainly a quick onset so it sounds like that.

Baby has been particularly active today, hope that's a good sign! I will certainly not be eating seafood while pregnant, in fact I don't think I will EVER eat crayfish again. It was extremely painful and as dp away, kids have had to entertain themselves today with ds missing a cinema trip, all of us missing sunday lunch at a friends, and me being completely unprepared for dd first day at school tomorrow. Will visit GP if there's any more symptoms but for now, lesson learnt. Thanks again.

Poor you, and you were supposed to be enjoying not studying. It sounds like whatever it was is all out of your system.

carrotcake · 10/09/2006 18:57

Hi Belgo, yes I did feel pretty fed up today, first weekend with no deadline looming and this happens. Typical. Might treat myself to something next week, massage maybe, or facial! Hope your studying is going well
